Polysomnographic Technologist

A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the clinical director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of other staff.

Responsibilities include collecting, analyzing, and integrating patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs. They prepare and calibrate equipment, apply electrodes and sensors, perform physiological calibrations, and fit PAP masks. They follow procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data and follow lights out and lights on procedures. They score sleep/wake stages and clinical events, generate accurate reports, and comply with safety and infection control issues. They perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance, maintain current CPR or BCLS certification, and demonstrate effective communication skills.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or higher level of education, satisfactory completion of a polysomnography program or A-STEP introductory course, certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, and current BLS certification. They must demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, flexibility, and professional conduct in the clinical setting.

Working conditions include twelve-hour night shifts, rotating to day shift, and assisting to meet the patient’s needs. Shifts occur Monday-Saturday nights 6:30pm-7:00am with a weekend rotation. Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust to focus. They will work under the direction of the physician and adhere to policies and procedures.
