Substation Control Design Engineer/Designer - (Forest Park, GA)

JOB SUMMARYThe Substation Design Control Engineer/Designer position is required to design protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects. This position is responsible for specifying and ordering material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. The position will also transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program. JOB RESPONSIBILITIESMake SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by exampleEnforce Quality Assurance guidelines for the preparation of high-quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substations using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standardsProvide guidance on Southern Company Design Standards, procedures, and processesDesign protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projectsAssist in the specification and ordering of material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Substation DesignInteract with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues Provide support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance Perform site visits for projects, including pre-engineering meetings, pre-construction meetings, and post-job evaluation meetings. Some overnight travel will be requiredSupport Southern Company’s design criteria and standardization effortHandling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goalsPosition will support Southern Company storm restoration effortsJOB QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION (Must meet at least one of the four below):Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred) with 5 years minimum relevant experienceBachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology (Electrical preferred) with 5 years minimum relevant experience4-year Degree (Non-Engineering) with minimum 8 years relevant experienceAssociate Degree with minimum 15 years relevant design experience No Degree with minimum 18 years of relevant design or utility experienceEXPERIENCE:Experience using Autodesk Suite (including AutoCAD Electrical) or higher is preferredSubstation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience a strong plusUnderstanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred.Ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line wiring diagram is preferredExperience in Transmission &/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is requiredKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simplyMust be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skillsMust work well in a team environment and must be able to develop and build relationships at all levelsMust possess effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlinesMust demonstrate a customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedbackGood understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferredKnowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferredTRAVEL & WORK LOCATIONThis position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and be in Metro Atlanta (Forest Park, GA).
