The Coordinator of Community Outreach reports to the Principal of the assigned CHP School. The Coordinator of Community Outreach is responsible to improve student achievement by assisting in the creation of community involvement in CHP Schools by assessing school, parent and other community needs and coordinating parent involvement, family support activities and community outreach programs at assigned schools in response to those needs and by assisting in the coordination of the planning, implementation, monitoring, communicating and evaluation of activities and services for parents and other community members at school facilities and in the community.

I. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following is an explanation of the duties of the Community Outreach Coordinator.  It includes the major highlights of the requirements of the position.   There should be a clear understanding that the duties outlined below are not all encompassing.   Additional responsibilities may be assigned to the Community Outreach Coordinator as required.

1. Working with school staff in developing, implementing and evaluating parent and community involvement and community outreach activities.

2. Advocating for parents and promoting interest in schooling and enhancing sense of community and commitment.

3. Coordinating parent and community involvement activities and services with other agencies and organizations.

4. Acting as a liaison between parents and community members and other agencies and organizations.

5. Serving as a resource to parents and community members regarding community agencies, events and activities.

6. Identifying students with credit deficiencies and making referrals to alternative programs.

7. Providing transportation to students and families to community resources for the receipt of social services.

8. Assessing needs of parents and community members.

9. Assisting school staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational activities and programs, including family literacy programs offered at the school for parents and other community members.

10. Encouraging parents of bilingual/bicultural students to upgrade their skills and knowledge of the educational process.

11. Assisting in the recruitment and training of school volunteers.

12. Helping school staff to develop and coordinate extended day, before and after school and intersession programs.

13. Promoting school projects and programs to the community.

14. Facilitating community involvement in school programs and activities.

15. Assisting in coordinating community use of school facility.

16. Assisting with recruitment, training, and monitoring of community members volunteering in student mentor program.

17. Assisting school and other CHP Schools with home visits.

18. May serve as interpreter during parent-teacher conferences, special education meetings, disciplinary referrals, and other school-based meetings as needed.

19. Maintaining regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

20. Performing related duties consistent with job description and assignment.

II. Truancy Duties

1. Enforces compulsory school attendance laws by counseling parents who are in violation. 

2. Maintain consistent communication through monthly school visits and home visits with families and provide ongoing support to students as needed.

3. Network with school personnel to identify student’s needs and to identify resources available for students and their families at the individual school sites.

4. Provide home and school visits to students and their families to assess barriers to school attendance and case management needs.

5. Monitor school attendance and compliance with the recommendation made by School Guide.

6. Provide link to parent education groups for the families of the student who are truant through the School Based Parent Program and Student Excellence Center.

7. Holds truancy information sessions for the advisory committee and develops the plan for the student, parents, and the school to follow.

8. Updates school principals and staff and provides recommendations.

9. Presents truancy programs to the community and school groups.

10. Prepares and writes reports and miscellaneous correspondence.

11. Participates in and collaborates with a variety of committees, professional associations, boards, and/or other related groups.

12. Become familiar with and stay current with available youth services in the community including programs in churches and community centers.

13. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

14. Demonstrates awareness and acceptance of cultural differences of clients, staff and community contacts.

Education, Training and Experience

1. Two years of progressively responsible experience in assessing parent involvement and/or community education needs and in parent involvement and/or community education program development, or closely related field.

2. Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in family support, community development, parent outreach, early childhood, or related field.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

1. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.

A. The Community Outreach Coordinator will work indoors, outdoors, on campus and off campus with frequent stressful situations.

B. You will work minimally 37.5 hours in a work week that may include occasional weekend and evening work.  It is expected to work beyond the regular work week hours.
