Senior Social Worker

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) through a complete review of the application. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Must possess a Master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in written and spoken English. Experience/Education: At least two years of experience post‑advanced practice clinical licensure; one year equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level in a specialized area of social work practice. Advanced Practice Skills: Demonstrated advanced practice skills and judgment, expertise in a specialized area, and post‑masters training from a recognized organization or university. Supervision: Must meet advanced practice supervision requirements in the state of licensure and include these qualifications in the application narrative and resume. Documentation: Provide documentation if state supervision requirements include additional certification or continuing education credits. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to provide specialized interventions, incorporate complex diagnosis, develop outcome evaluations, offer consultation, and write policy and practice guidelines. Duties Provide post‑traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) services to Domiciliary Veterans and serve as a resource for case management, therapy, after‑care planning, and follow‑up. Complete psychosocial assessments for Veterans admitted to the Domiciliary Program at VA Central Iowa. Develop evidence‑based recovery‑oriented treatment plans in accordance with Joint Commission and CARF standards. Lead the PTSD multidisciplinary treatment team and function as a residential treatment team member when providing direct care. Offer social work case management for Veterans on the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Programs (MHRRTP) or Domiciliary. Employ a variety of treatment modalities, including crisis intervention, group therapy, family therapy, motivational interviewing, and discharge planning. Engage patients in the formulation and implementation of their rehabilitation goals for optimal functioning. Participate in orientation and training sessions for new employees and medical‑center staff on mental‑health and psychosocial needs, including homelessness. Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of after‑care rehabilitation resources and facilitate referrals. Serve as a liaison between inpatient, outpatient, and community services, advising families on resources and informing after‑care facilities of VA programs. Ensure timely and proper documentation in the clinical treatment file, including assessments, treatment plans, discharge summaries, and statistical data in the DSS system. Mentor entry‑level social workers and provide clinical supervision to unlicensed and advanced‑practice peers. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm.
