Maritime Systems Technician
$30 per hourThe Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
Are you interested in supporting the development of cutting-edge robotic systems?
Do you enjoy building, fabricating, installing, and testing complex systems in the field and/or onboard
maritime vessels?
Do you like the idea of working with engineers to prototype solutions to Navy operational challenges?
If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.
We are seeking a Maritime Systems Technician to help us perform rapid prototyping and fielding for the
Navy's future uncrewed, robotic, and autonomous systems. You will be joining a hardworking team of
engineers who cultivate a fast-paced collaborative development environment to build, test, and deploy
a wide range of complex systems. These systems span the air, sea surface, and subsea domains which
all present their own unique and exciting technical and logistical challenges. You will contribute to the
development of technologies that enable the Navy's future uncrewed fleet.
As a Maritime Systems Technician, you will...
- Primarily be responsible for providing electro-mechanical design, fabrication, assembly, and
troubleshooting for a variety of complex systems at APL and on field tests. - Support coordination and fabrication of parts and assemblies with the machine shop, engineers,
and other technicians within, or outside of, the lab. - Support field and at-sea testing onboard Navy platforms to include site surveys, ship checks,
installation, test and maintenance, and recovery of installed systems. - Support coordination of shop/high bay spaces, various vehicles/boats used for testing, and
complex material lists to support test efforts. - Maintain equipment needed for fabrication, assembly, and testing, as well as purchasing
general-purpose tools to support shop functions. - Manage and track fabrication work orders and associated parts for assembly, delivery, and
shipment purposes
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have relevant experience in industry or military, fabricating, assembling, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electro-mechanical systems.
- Have strong organizational skills with assembling material lists for complex systems - including specifying components, arranging logistics with other technicians, and supporting electrical tasks.
- Can work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced work environment with tight delivery schedules.
- Are able to work and communicate as a member of a creative team of technicians and engineers with varying experience and backgrounds.
- Are willing and able to work in classified laboratories, travel to test locations in the desert, mountains, and/or onboard US Navy or research vessels for 15% of your time and you can lift over 50 lbs.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
- Have an Associate Degree from a two-year college or technical trade school.
- Have 5+ years of relevant experience in industry or military
- Have experience with electromechanical maintenance on large vehicles - i.e. cars, boats, or large machinery.
- Have experience with design, fabrication, integration, testing, and deployment of complex electromechanical systems, from initial concept through fabrication and bench/field tests.
- Experience supporting at-sea tests from ocean-going vessels including shipboard installations, maritime procedures, and/or familiarity with deployment and recovery operations at sea.
- Have experience in production, manufacturing, warehousing, large-scale equipment logistics, and/or maritime site work.
- Have hands-on experience with electronics fabrication tools.
- Have experience with Quality Assurance practices and safe operation and/or fabrication within working environments.
- Have real-world hands-on experience with Navy electronics and electro-mechanical systems.
- Hold an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
