Job Description

This Phlebotomist I role focuses on performing high-quality venipuncture and specimen collection while supporting a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. You will collect, process, and store specimens according to established procedures, ensure accurate documentation, and help maintain an efficient workflow. The position requires strong customer service skills, as you will clearly explain procedures to patients across all age groups and assist with patient registration and inquiries.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and specific test requirements.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders, following all protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes and storing them at required temperatures.
• Follow specific protocols for specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality and comply with regulatory standards.
• Perform specimen processing activities, including centrifugation, labeling, and documentation of maintenance and decontamination tasks.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and register patients as they arrive.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
• Attend annual departmental trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
• Contribute to troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve processes and efficiency.
• Provide courteous, patient-focused service to individuals from pediatric to geriatric age groups, ensuring a positive experience.
• Draw blood from approximately 25 patients per day while maintaining accuracy, safety, and quality standards.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• 1–2 years of phlebotomy experience, including blood draws and specimen collection.
• Proficiency in performing venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience with blood draws, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
• Ability to work efficiently with a high volume of patients, including drawing approximately 25 patients per day.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Strong customer service skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients.
• Ability to work confidently with patients across all age ranges, from pediatrics to geriatrics.
• Attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions, and verifying orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and compliance.

• Ability to read and communicate laboratory results over the phone in a clear and professional manner.
• Strong organizational skills to manage patient registration, specimen processing, and documentation simultaneously.
• Experience working with pediatric and geriatric populations and adapting communication style to different age groups.
• Willingness to attend annual department trainings and stay current on procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot workflow issues and contribute to process improvement.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting with direct patient interaction throughout the day. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You will see a broad range of patients, from pediatric to geriatric, and perform blood draws for approximately 25 patients per day. The environment involves frequent specimen handling, including blood, urine, and other samples, and the use of equipment such as needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges. You will work with computer systems for patient registration, order verification, and documentation, including the use of Microsoft Office Suite. The position requires adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and standard laboratory safety practices. Attire is consistent with a clinical and laboratory setting, including appropriate professional clothing and any required protective equipment.

This is a Contract position based out of Salt Lake City, UT.

The pay range for this position is $18.98 - $18.98/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
