Principal AI-Native Engineer

Role Description

We are looking for Principal AI-Native Engineers to build agentic systems for our portfolio companies. This role involves:

• Partnering with subject-matter experts to turn functional specs into agentic system designs.
• Designing agent architectures including boundaries, orchestration, control flow, and human-in-the-loop placement.
• Building, shipping, and operating production agentic systems that run real business functions end to end.
• Extending and hardening the in-house orchestration framework.
• Improving automated development and QA agents in our engineering pipeline.
• Creating and maintaining machine-readable context artifacts.
• Designing retrieval and context-assembly strategies.
• Integrating agentic systems with live business platforms.
• Defining success criteria and building eval harnesses.
• Instrumenting systems with tracing and observability.
• Building guardrails, fallbacks, retries, and audit trails.
• Tracking and controlling token and tool costs.
• Monitoring eval trendlines and acting on findings.
• Investigating and resolving regressions and incidents.
• Evolving deployed systems as business processes change.
• Extracting reusable components from solved problems.
• Evaluating emerging models and making adoption calls.
• Defining practices for responsible autonomous operation.
• Reviewing agentic work built elsewhere in the organization.
• Working alongside engineers and operators to explain system behavior.
• Retiring systems that are not delivering and documenting why.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• 3+ years building AI-Native or agentic systems that reached production.
• Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of systems designed, built, shipped, and operated.
• Experience integrating AI systems with production platforms.
• Experience designing and running evaluations for non-deterministic systems.
• Experience operating LLM-based systems in production.
• Experience becoming productive quickly inside large, complex codebases.
• Experience working from specifications set by domain experts.
• Experience with platform, infrastructure, or developer-tooling work.
• Ownership and autonomy in your work.
• Intellectual honesty and judgment in decision-making.
• Adaptability to changing techniques and collaboration across expertise boundaries.
• Strong communication skills.

• Open-source contributions or public work on agentic systems.
