The role is open to candidates throughout the United States and supports a hybrid work environment. Overview The Employment Tax Practice delivers compliance, appeals, and tax advisory services for assigned clients. Responsibilities include maintaining client relationships, managing employment tax and minimization opportunities, enforcing policies and guidelines, researching tax issues, preparing memorandums and letters, reviewing federal, state, and local tax returns, and supporting litigation and appeals. People Team Responsibilities Ensure compliance with company policies, practice guidelines, and standards. Collaborate with Ryan team members to avoid duplication of effort on client projects. Contribute to building the practice knowledge base and mentor colleagues. Client Duties Develop client workplans and schedules for project deliverables. Perform services at client locations as required. Prepare and conduct client presentations. Review and reconcile client data and identify tax issues for research. Respond to client inquiries and requests from the IRS and state/local tax agencies. Serve as principal contact for client activity when required. Handle all aspects of the appeal process (informal, formal, and litigation) and report status to the client. Assist clients with accruals, budgets, and forecasts. Support client billing, collections, financial forecasting, and bonus allocation. Communicate new issues, legislative changes, training opportunities, and client needs. Develop new clients and broaden practice scope. Value Functions Manage and monitor all aspects of employment tax projects. Obtain and review federal, state, and local tax returns. Maintain employment tax calendars for federal, state, local, and international jurisdictions as required. Oversee preparation, review, and processing of amended tax returns and correspondence. Handle employment tax and state unemployment insurance appeals. Pursue and maintain professional designations (e.g., EA, CPA, CPP, CIRS). Participate in professional organizations. Promote the practice internally and externally to build a pipeline of candidates. Perform additional duties as assigned. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance/Economics, or Taxation is required; Master’s degree is preferred. Four to six years of employment tax–related experience is required. Computer Skills Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and internet research is required. Experience with Salesforce and Workday is a plus. Certificates and Licenses Valid driver’s license is required. EA, CPA, CPP, CIRS, or another appropriate designation is required, or a commitment to earn the designation within two years of employment. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervisory responsibilities may be assigned depending on the level of the role, in accordance with company policies and applicable laws. Work Environment Standard indoor working environment. Occasional long periods of sitting while working at a computer. Occasional long periods of standing while copying. Regular interaction with employees and clients in person, via email, and by telephone. Independent travel for field inspections may be required, up to 50% of the working time.
