About 603 Legal Aid:
603 Legal Aid provides free, quality civil legal services to people facing New Hampshire legal issues through compassionate advocacy, education, and pro bono representation.
Position Summary:
The Community Justice Worker (CJW) Staff Attorney will advocate to ensure that low-income and underserved residents in our community are provided with excellent free legal advice and representation. The CJW Staff Attorney will be responsible for the implementation of the Community Justice Worker (CJW) Pilot, including but not limited to coordinating volunteer engagement, supporting community partnerships, managing data collection and program evaluation, and managing the CJW network.
The CJW Staff Attorney will focus on accreditation and management of CJWs by developing and implementing CJW curricula and adjusting legal training as needed. The CJW Attorney will be responsible for developing and implementing the standards for Community Justice Workers in accordance with New Hampshire Unauthorized Practice of Law rules and standards, as well as all other applicable rules and regulations.
The CJW Attorney will also oversee balancing a caseload of public benefits cases that are referred to 603LA by CJW’s or obtained elsewise, as well as overseeing comprehensive program management tasks. Successful candidates will use their skills to identify and find solutions for clients who present with a variety of legal issues, such as SNAP, FANF, Medicare, and other public benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct Representation and Advocacy:
· Maintain an active caseload of advice, brief service, and extended representation matters across civil legal issues such as SNAP, FANF, Medicare and other public benefits matters.
· Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and support CJWs and clients navigating complex legal systems.
· Collaborate and co-counsel with other attorneys, advocates, and CJWs as needed.
· Connect CJWs and clients with legal and social service partners for holistic support.
· Deliver services in person, virtually, and in community-based settings, including regular on-site visits and mobile outreach.
· Review and approve legal advice and documentation prepared by CJWs.
· Ensure quality legal services and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations for all services and cases handled by CJWs and the Staff Attorney.
Outreach and Partnerships
· Build and maintain relationships with local community partners in targeted areas of the CJW Pilot.
· Collaborate with community-based advocates who help identify, screen, and refer clients for legal services.
· Coordinate trainings and legal education sessions for community partner staff members.
· Coordinate outreach, cross-referrals, and pro bono engagement with partners through the team of CJWs.
· Lead or participate in community education and outreach efforts.
· Develop clear, accessible legal education materials tailored to CJWs and to clients.
· Recruit, supervise, and train a team of CJWs and maintain the relationship to ensure quality limited-scope legal services are provided within the bounds of authorized practice.
Program Coordination, Compliance, and Training
· Serve as a key coordinator for the CJW Pilot, supporting overall service delivery and ensuring alignment with grant requirements and organizational priorities.
· Coordinate day-to-day program activities and serve as a central point of contact for CJWs.
· Support compliance with federal and other grant requirements, including documentation, reporting, and performance tracking.
· Maintain accurate and timely documentation to support reporting, evaluation, and accountability standards.
· Collaborate with leadership and staff to ensure consistent, high-quality, and compliant service delivery.
· Ensure compliance with all state, federal, ABA practice of law, and other requirements as applicable.
Program Development, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement
· Track case data and outcomes to assess impact, identify trends, and improve service delivery. Use findings and client experience data to refine strategies and ensure services remain responsive and effective.
· Track case data and outcomes, to complete required grant quarterly and year end programmatic reports.
· Participate in internal planning and systems improvements to strengthen and expand services statewide.
· Support grant reporting, compliance, and related fund development activities as needed.
· Participate in ongoing evaluation of trainings, case work and program outcomes of the CJW Pilot.
Professional Practice and Learning
· Uphold the highest ethical and professional responsibilities at all times.
· Stay current on legal developments and pursue ongoing professional development.
· Engage in required training related to program compliance, documentation standards, and service delivery expectations.
· Contribute to a collaborative, team-based legal practice, including sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues.
· Provide guidance or supervision to paralegal or support staff, as appropriate.
· Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
· Admission to practice law in New Hampshire, or eligibility to obtain admission within one year of hire.
· At least 3-5 years of experience in litigation, client representation, program management, and/or legal practice preferred.
· Experience with community organizations, social service systems, or grant-funded program support (data tracking/reporting/compliance) preferred.
· Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; able to manage multiple priorities and build collaborative relationships across teams.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable learning database systems (e.g., LegalServer).
· Spanish or other language skills preferred.
· Professional, discreet, and able to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
· Trauma-informed, flexible, and adaptable when working with low-income and diverse populations.
· Self-directed and able to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
· Committed to access to justice and to social, economic, and racial justice.
· Willing to travel within New Hampshire as needed.
Salary/Benefits:
This position is full-time (37.5 hours weekly) and considered exempt for the purpose of federal wage/hour law. 603 Legal Aid maintains a transparent, mission-driven compensation structure designed to support internal equity and fairness. Salary is based on experience, with an anticipated
range of $72,000–$78,000 annually, which represents a staff attorney salary at 3 to 5 years of experience on our pay scale. Hiring for this position is contingent upon approval and funding of a pending grant proposal, as is continued employment.
This position will be hybrid, three days in the office and two days from home, after an initial 90-day introductory period. Our benefits package includes medical, retirement, life and disability and generous paid time off. The position is based in our Concord, NH office.
