Licensed Practical Nurse
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties. This includes the execution of physician orders and assisting the physician in examinations and treatments. The role involves performing technical and clinical procedures within the scope of the nurse's license. The nurse will assist in the management of the facility medical department. Appropriate nursing skills will be applied in the care and treatment of inmates and residents. The nurse will attend sick calls with the physician to see inmates and residents. Preparation of the examining room and equipment is required. The nurse will operate pill calls, dispense medication, and document as required by policies and procedures. Control of medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment is needed. Emergency procedures will be performed as necessary. It is important to keep equipment and the work area clean utilizing appropriate sanitation methods. Documentation and reporting of activities must follow established policies and procedures. The nurse will assist with evaluating the provision of all medical services. There must be maintenance of absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Observation and recording of inmate and resident behavior is required. The medical unit must be inspected for items that could be used as contraband. Assistance will be provided in preparing and maintaining a variety of records, reports, and logs. Reading, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures is necessary. Response to lawsuits and attendance at court hearings may be required. Efficient communication is essential with administration, staff, inmates, residents, visitors, and the general public. Safety requirements must be evaluated and recommended to provide a safe working environment. Preparation of safety and accident reports is required as per policies and procedures. The nurse will escort inmates and residents or coordinate their movement for medical treatment. Initiation and completion of investigations and inquiries will be performed as directed. Engagement in functions in confined areas including working rotating shifts is necessary. Awareness of potential verbal abuse in a hostile environment is required.
