Electronics Technician

To perform specialized work in the installation, removal, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment and accessories. This job classification is hired in one of two City Departments. 1 911 Radio Communications Electronics Shop, or 2 Public Works Parking Meters. The Job duties and responsibilities for each location are outlined below.

Work Location:
This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.

• Radio Communications Electronics Shop :
  1. Maintain and repair Radio Communications Equipment and wiring in vehicles and buildings.
  2. Work on Fire Alerting and overhead speaker PA systems related to Alert Systems.
  3. Conduct troubleshooting of systems in vehicles and buildings, repair/replace as needed.
  4. Assist in BDA Systems testing and other coverage testing.
  5. Assist in requesting/ordering service parts and supplies for installations and repairs.
  6. Assist the Mobile Communications Technicians with off-site installations and radio tower site servicing.
  7. Document and TAG equipment ID's as well as track the location where each one is installed using the computer database.
  8. Troubleshoot and repair a broad range of electronics used in squad cars, fire trucks and public works vehicles.
  9. Perform installations of all types of communications equipment used in all City Departments.
  10. Install wiring, set up, program and repair cellular devices and take calls regarding operational issues by users.
  11. Write service ticket report as to nature of repair, problem found, parts used, and time spent on repair and transfer ticket, time and job code to timecard to be submitted for cost and billing finalization.
  12. Complete installations and removals from squad cars, fire trucks, public works, and Regulatory Services vehicles.
  13. Work with "Drive in" customers to trouble shoot and repair miscellaneous antenna and power or other installation problems in City vehicles.
• Parking Systems:
  1. Maintain and repair on and off-street parking equipment.
  2. Work 311 Parking Meter Issue queue and resolve or dispatch issue to meter shop foreman.
  3. Conduct parking meter and Parking Access and Revue Systems (PARCS) related field checks.
  4. Assist in monitoring PARCS and parking meter back-end system for alarms, communication status and other issues.
  5. Assist in ordering meter sticker signage and programming request.
  6. Assist with installation of PARCS, meters, and meter related signage.
  7. Document and TAG equipment ID's as well as track the location where each one is installed using the computer database.
  8. Troubleshoot and repair parking meter pay stations, PARCS equipment, printers, displays and keyboards, computers and other related equipment.
  9. Perform installations of all communications equipment used in on or off-street parking equipment.
  10. Install wiring, set up, program and repair cellular units and take calls regarding operational issues by users.
  11. Write service ticket report as to nature of repair, problem found, parts used, and time spent on repair and transfer ticket, time, and job code to timecard to be submitted for cost and billing finalization.
  12. Collect data from the field and organize data for analysis for multiple on street parking initiatives.
  13. Research other meter related issues assigned.
      
      

Working Conditions:
Shop environment and field work, (Indoor and outdoor work), exposure to high voltage and heights.

Minimum Education:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a degree/ diploma in, Electronic Technology, Industrial Electronics or a highly related field or equivalent.

Minimum Experience:
One year of verifiable work experience in the repair of, electronic equipment, and accessories depending on assignment.

Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Driver's License required

Selection Process:
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%) . It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. Background Check:
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. The City has determined that a thorough Minneapolis Police Department criminal background check is necessary for positions with this job title. Drug and Alcohol Testing:
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement:
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire six months after it has been established.

Interview Selection:
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

1. Considerable knowledge of electronic equipment principles, repair procedures and testing equipment.
2. Considerable knowledge of troubleshooting procedures and specialized highly technical test and service equipment along with a good awareness of safety concerns.
3. Knowledge and understanding of solid-state electronics theory, repair and maintenance techniques.
4. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
5. Ability to maintain awareness of state-of-the-art technology through continued involvement in educational and professional opportunities.
6. Ability to read schematics and blueprints.
7. Physical ability to lift and carry equipment 40lbs, heavy equipment lift assist, work at heights and in cramped spaces.
