Reports to Athletic Director. Duration: Spring Season. Salary: New coaches may be granted a maximum of five years experience for documented IHSA experience. Longevity is based on years of coaching regardless of the sport. Purpose Statement The job of Head Coach was established to design and implement the athletic program for the assigned sport at the High School level in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; to supervise coaching personnel, students, and program activities; to serve as a positive role model and liaison between the school, district, community, and external organizations. Functions Analyze opposition strategies and develop game plans. Assess student athletes, provide feedback, and determine team placement. Attend meetings, workshops, conferences to receive and convey information. Conduct support activities such as parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets. Develop game strategies and practice regimes for performance improvement. Evaluate facilities and playing fields to reduce injury risk. Guide and mentor other coaching personnel. Identify appropriate use of program funding in compliance with policies. Implement practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient program operation. Instruct student athletes to promote growth, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Maintain records required by district, conference, and state, and comply with reporting. Make coaching assignments to match skills and program needs. Manage overall athletic program within assigned area for continuity across all levels. Monitor academic eligibility and provide interventions to maintain IHSA requirements. Oversee assistant coaches, student managers, and volunteers. Perform personnel functions, including interviewing and recommending staff. Promote the program through clinics, skill‑camps, community meetings. Respond to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, and college representatives. Serve as liaison for the program at IHSA meetings, conference tournaments, and workshops. Supervise student athletes during all participation venues to ensure safety. Support students during the college recruiting process. Perform other related duties as assigned. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Skills required include adapting to changing priorities, administering first aid, applying laws and regulations, coordinating activities, organizing and communicating information, overseeing financial transactions. Knowledge required includes algebra/geometry, reviewing technical information, communicating persuasively, analyzing situations, understanding community support, injury prevention protocols, IHSA concussion protocols, laws, participant eligibility, public relations protocols, professional standards, and safety practices. Abilities required include scheduling numerous activities, collecting and classifying data, operating equipment, working independently with diverse individuals, problem‑solving, strong leadership, confidentiality, meeting deadlines, enforcing sportsmanship, motivating athletes, providing discipline, traveling for events, and working extended hours. Responsibility Manage department, supervise budgeted funds, utilize resources from other units, and influence organization services. Working Environment Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling. Approx. 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing; exposure to temperature extremes and injury risk. Experience Job‑related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
