Recreation Leader

Job Summary This is a year-round part-time temporary position. Under the general supervision of a Recreation Coordinator, assist with implementation and oversight of recreation programs and facilities; provide administrative and logistical support to recreation programs; open, close and care for recreational facilities; assist at special events. Essential Duties Assist the Recreation Coordinator in scheduling, planning and implementing recreation programs in the areas of community events, rentals, and general programs. Lead groups in a variety of recreational activities, educational programs, senior and wellness programs, field trips, and sports; provide on-site supervision and instruction to participants. Provide information to recreation program instructors and participants regarding program schedules; explain registration requirements to the general public. Assist in promoting recreation activities in the community. Assist in monitoring and evaluating recreation programs. Maintain a variety of records and program reports. Maintain program equipment in good working order; ensure facility and grounds are kept neat, clean and litter free. Prepare recreational facilities for use; ensure that appropriate equipment is available for classes and events; set up and take down tables, other furniture and equipment. Perform routine custodial work such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning hard surfaces and wiping up spills. Monitor recreational activities; ensure activities are safe and appropriate. Maintain attendance reports, activity logs, incident/accident reports and related records. May supervise part-time, seasonal and/or volunteer recreation staff and oversee special interest instructors. Order program materials and supplies. Operate office equipment including computers, copiers, to perform administrative tasks. Provide first aid in case of minor injury. Education, Experience, and Other Requirements Any combination equivalent to: high school graduation and one year community-based recreation program experience. Experience working with diverse age groups from youth to seniors. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General rules, practices and terminology of recreational activities. Requirements of maintaining a recreational facility in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Proper methods of setting up and storing furniture, equipment, materials and supplies. Methods, equipment and materials used in general custodial work. Oral and written communications. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy and respect. Diverse educational, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including people with disabilities, and the unique needs of our community’s residents. Current community recreation theory and practices. Operations, services and activities of a comprehensive municipal recreation program. Principles and practices of recreation program development and implementation. Principles, methods and techniques of instruction. Methods and techniques of planning, organizing, and supervising recreation activities. A wide variety of recreation facilities, including daily operations and equipment. Record keeping techniques. Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers and software. Work is performed in an office environment; an indoor/outdoor recreational environment subject to noise, distractions, seasonal heat and adverse weather conditions; and travel from site to site. Physical Abilities Physical agility and stamina; lifting, walking and overall physical movement; carrying, pushing or pulling; moderate lifting up to 50 pounds; seeing to read program materials; hearing and speaking to exchange information with others. Employment and Benefits All temporary and seasonal workers with the City are employed at will. Either party may terminate the employment relationship at any time with or without cause, and for any lawful reason or for no reason. Paid interns shall receive holiday pay. Employees in grant funded positions are eligible for paid holidays if specified in the grant.
