Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student‑loan payment reimbursement program. Eligibility requirements are specified by VHA policy, and applicants must submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program office determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and the eligibility period (one to five years) after reviewing the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible. Qualifications Applicant must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the announcement. Pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physician(s) who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may be appointed only if recruiting qualified citizens is not possible. Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved VA school. Full and unrestricted state medical license. Completion of an approved residency or equivalent training in a core specialty leading to board certification. Additional options: one year of internship or transitional residency followed by two years of independent practice; or non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent U.S. practice with responsibilities related to the position. Special provisions exist for residents in accredited programs who meet the basic requirements; they may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) on an intermittent basis. PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they operate under a defined scope of practice and supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. ABPN Board Certification or Board Eligibility with projected certification is preferred. Preferred experience: fellowship training in demyelinating disease, neuromuscular disease, and movement disorders. Opportunity exists for research. Physical Requirements: See VA Handbook 5019. Duties Join the Neurology Team at East Orange VA Medical Center and provide evidence‑based, comprehensive neurologic care in a compassionate and accessible environment. Manage outpatients and in‑patients/ER on the Neurology Consult Service. Precept residents in outpatient clinics, seeing patients face‑to‑face and via Tele‑Neurology. Provide inpatient consults in collaboration with the consult resident. Board Certified or Board Eligible and working toward certification within a reasonable period. Perform comprehensive neurological assessments and review diagnostic tests (MRI, CT, EEG, lumbar puncture). Develop individualized treatment plans, including medication management, physical therapy referrals, and lifestyle counseling with an emphasis on whole health. Deliver care consistent with hospital policy and VHA national benchmarks. Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date patient records in compliance with VA policies and privacy regulations. Provide consultations in the Emergency Room, inpatient units, and/or CLC during on‑call and as a member of the Neurology Inpatient Consultative Service. Participate in resident education, teaching, and the academic mission of VHA and SUNY Stony Brook. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure continuity and high‑quality care for veterans. If fellowship trained, conduct EMG/NCV, EEG interpretation, or provide subspecialty care. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and assurance programs for the Neurology Service and facility. Champion evidence‑based medicine and peer review to enhance care quality. Share in rotating on‑call responsibilities, primarily offsite, supervising the on‑call resident. Travel Expectations: Candidate will travel between Hamilton, Tinton Falls, and Tom River clinics.
