ROLE SUMMARY

Howard University Hospital is seeking an experienced and dynamic Nurse Manager to lead our Cardiac/Telemetry Medical-Surgical unit . In this role, you will provide clinical, operational, and administrative leadership while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centered nursing care.

The Nurse Manager is accountable for assessing, planning, directing, and evaluating nursing care within the Cardiac/Telemetry Med Surg department. This leader oversees day-to-day unit operations, staff development and performance, clinical practice, quality and performance improvement, resource management, and the overall patient experience. The Nurse Manager works closely with nursing administration, physicians, and members of the multidisciplinary team to promote effective communication, strong clinical outcomes, and continuous improvement.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Provide leadership, accountability, and oversight for the day-to-day operations of the Cardiac/Telemetry Med Surg department. 
• Serve as a role model and mentor to charge nurses and staff, fostering an empowered, collaborative, and shared decision-making environment. 
• Promote staff participation in shared decision-making activities and establish goals that support leadership development and succession planning. 
• Manage staff orientation, education, competencies, quality improvement activities, staff meetings, communication, and annual performance evaluations. 
• Establish, model, and uphold standards of nursing practice and performance expectations while monitoring staff performance, professional behaviors, and competency.
• Develop objectives and goals that support the continued professional and clinical development of the nursing team. 
• Develop and manage departmental budgets, appropriately allocate resources, and monitor budget performance and variances. 
• Lead timely and accurate responses related to service recovery, complaints, near misses, and adverse events. 
• Participate in patient rounds and ensure staff participation in rounding as part of the care delivery model to support the patient experience and clinical outcomes. 
• Lead and encourage staff participation in continuous performance improvement initiatives and shared governance activities.
• Operationalize organizational strategic priorities within the department and ensure unit goals align with nursing and organizational mission, vision, and goals. 
• Serve as a liaison between nursing administration and medical staff while facilitating positive and collaborative communication across departments. 
• Identify and monitor resources necessary for the safe delivery of patient care, including staffing, equipment, and department facilities. 
• Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, Howard University Code of Ethics, Health Sciences Standards of Conduct, HIPAA requirements, and applicable federal healthcare program requirements. 
• Maintain the confidentiality of patients, families, and staff. 
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of professional nursing experience in Cardiac, Telemetry, Medical-Surgical nursing, or a closely related acute care specialty . The underlying JD requires five years of experience in the applicable department-specific area.
• Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience . 
• Current District of Columbia nursing license . 
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification . 
• Certification in leadership within one year of eligibility. 
• Expert knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and clinical skills, as well as performance improvement principles. 
• Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to function independently.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with providers, patients, and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize activities, manage multiple responsibilities, and respond productively to changing priorities and interruptions. 
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and follow-through skills. 
• Ability to remain flexible, organized, and professional and make sound decisions during stressful or crisis situations.
• Strategic thinking skills with the ability to anticipate future needs and trends and incorporate them into departmental planning. 
• Demonstrated experience using sound judgment while working with diverse populations. 
• Participation in professional organizations. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master's degree in Nursing or a related field preferred.

Additional Schedule Requirements: Occasional evenings, with nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. 

PAY

The annual base salary range for this position is $130,000 - $145,000 .

Actual compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, education, skills, credentials, internal equity, and other applicable factors.
