Our organization is on the lookout for board-eligible or board-certified intensivists to enhance our faculty within the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at UPMC Presbyterian. We invite applications from dedicated clinicians, clinician-educators, and clinician-scientists who are passionate about providing exceptional multidisciplinary care, mentoring trainees, and advancing the academic goals of our department.

The ideal candidate will deliver attending-level critical care to a complex cardiothoracic patient population. This includes individuals recovering from cardiac and thoracic surgeries, those experiencing cardiogenic shock, respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, advanced heart failure, or intricate arrhythmias, as well as patients needing temporary or long-term mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ventricular assist devices, Impella support, or intra-aortic balloon pump therapy. This position demands clinical acumen, advanced hemodynamic management skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate closely with cardiac and thoracic surgeons, cardiologists, heart failure specialists, transplant teams, perfusionists, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide clinical coverage in the CTICU at UPMC Presbyterian.
• Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds.
• Develop and implement evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
• Supervise and educate fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
• Engage in quality improvement, patient safety, and operational initiatives.
• Foster an inclusive learning and clinical environment.

Faculty members may also have the chance to provide clinical care in other ICUs within the UPMC Health System, depending on departmental needs, clinical expertise, and mutual agreement.

Minimum Qualifications and Desirable Attributes:

Applicants must possess an MD or DO degree, be board-certified or board-eligible in critical care medicine by a recognized U.S. accreditation board, and be eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania. Base training may encompass internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, neurology, or another relevant field with accredited critical care training. Essential qualifications include strong communication skills, professionalism, sound clinical judgment, and a dedication to teamwork, education, patient-centered care, and fostering a respectful and inclusive academic atmosphere. While prior clinical experience or specialized training in cardiothoracic critical care, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, advanced hemodynamic management, perioperative cardiothoracic care, echocardiography, quality improvement, education, or clinical research is advantageous, it is not mandatory.

About the Department:

The faculty within the Department of Critical Care Medicine deliver cutting-edge multidisciplinary care for critically ill adult and pediatric patients throughout the UPMC Health System. The department is recognized nationally for its leadership in critical care education, faculty development, quality improvement, and research, with initiatives that encompass clinical care, translational science, population health, implementation science, and health services research.

Rank, Title, and Compensation:

Academic appointments will be offered at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the non-tenure stream, based on qualifications, experience, and academic achievements.
