Database Administrator

The Database Administrator role within the Arizona Department of Education's Information Technology Division is responsible for managing and maintaining the department's databases, focusing on SQL Server environments. This position involves database design, backup and recovery, performance tuning, disaster recovery, PowerShell scripting for automation, and Power BI configuration. The role supports data-driven solutions through collaboration with application and BI teams and requires occasional in-state travel. It is a contract-to-hire position requiring eligibility for full-time employment and availability for in-person work primarily in Phoenix, Arizona. Responsibilities:

• Manage database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
• Design and maintain logical and physical database structures.
• Develop, optimize, and maintain stored procedures, functions, triggers, and complex SQL queries.
• Install, configure, and upgrade SQL Server database software.
• Monitor and tune database performance and troubleshoot operational issues.
• Automate database administration tasks using PowerShell scripting.
• Configure and support Power BI datasets, gateways, and refresh schedules.
• Design and implement ETL processes and build SSIS packages for data integration.
• Collaborate with IT staff to define system requirements related to data storage and retrieval.
• Review and improve existing database architecture and code.
• Manage Azure database virtual machines and SQL Server Always On configurations.
• Develop and maintain database migration and version control procedures.
• Provide on-call support for database issues and assist with off-hours processes.
• Assist in interviewing, training new hires, and mentoring junior developers.
• Document database procedures, standards, and educate users.
• Perform database maintenance, including purging and archiving historical data.
• Implement and enforce database security guidelines and mechanisms.
• Occasionally travel within the state as required.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in database administration.
• Extensive experience with SQL Server versions 2000 through 2022.
• Proficiency in Transact-SQL, stored procedure design, and database performance tuning.
• Experience with SQL Server clustering, Always On availability groups, and disaster recovery planning.
• Strong PowerShell scripting skills for automation of database tasks.
• Knowledge of database backup, recovery, and replication strategies.
• Experience with Azure database virtual machines and hardware installation/configuration.
• Ability to configure and support Power BI datasets and refresh schedules.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities effectively.

• Experience designing and implementing ETL workflows using SSIS.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices and version control for database objects.
• Experience developing database administration tools and utilities.
• Knowledge of logical and physical data modeling.
• Ability to synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly.
• Experience mentoring junior staff and participating in hiring processes.

• Must be eligible for full-time employment conversion; no visa sponsorship available.
• Position requires in-person presence in Phoenix, Arizona, with initial 2-3 days onsite followed by monthly or as-needed visits.
• Background checks and drug screenings conducted via HireRight.
• On-call support responsibilities for off-hours database issues.
• Occasional in-state travel required.

• Hybrid work environment with up to two remote days per week, contingent on business needs.
• Ability and willingness to work in-office up to five days per week as required.
• Contract-to-hire position with a tentative start date dependent on interview and onboarding completion.
