Assistant Electrical Engineer

Position Overview Seattle Public Utilities is seeking an entry‑level electrical engineer to support projects across water, drainage, wastewater, and solid waste. The role involves detailed design, procurement, testing, and commissioning of electrical equipment, as well as analysis and engineering oversight for new and existing facilities. Responsibilities Support detailed electrical design work for facility projects including pumping stations, reservoirs, treatment plants, maintenance shops, and solid waste transfer stations. Assist the electrical engineer of record on multidisciplinary design teams for complex projects. Support the selection, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical equipment and systems within major infrastructure projects. Provide technical expertise in specialized electrical engineering areas. Perform power system analyses, including arc flash studies, for new and existing facilities. Assist in engineering oversight to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and operational standards. Contribute to planning, design, and implementation of overhead and underground electrical and communication systems. Coordinate with electrical contractors, public agencies, and utility crews during construction. Review plans, specifications, and contract documents. Support project engineering staff on sophisticated projects involving power, lighting, and control systems. Help review and design modifications to existing facilities with electrical and SCADA systems. Grow and learn electrical engineering utility work. Major Projects / Potential Responsibilities Wastewater Pump Station Rehabilitation projects. Spokane Street Water Pump Station project. Ship Canal Water Quality project. Tolt Dam Power System upgrade project. Support I&C aspects during design, construction, testing, acceptance, operation and maintenance of capital projects. Assist with planning and execution of electrical and instrumentation work on water and wastewater assets. Prepare and review preliminary project estimates, schedules, material requirements, specifications, cutover instructions, user manuals, and maintenance instructions. Create and maintain standards, procedures and records for instrumentation and electrical projects. Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 3 years of electrical and I&C design or integration experience for municipal water/wastewater systems. Proficiency in AutoCAD. Knowledge of SCADA/HMI systems, PLCs, RTUs, motor controls, and variable frequency drives. Understanding of industrial control networks, Modbus, and communications protocols. Familiarity with electrical codes, standards, and regulations. Experience with process instrumentation (pressure, level, flow) and geotechnical instrumentation. Strong technical writing, project management, and teamwork skills. Attention to detail, effective communication, and organizational abilities. Ability to work within SPU Workplace Expectations and core values. Work Environment and Physical Demands Normal city office environment; occasional field assignments with exposure to weather, traffic, hazardous substances, high voltage equipment, construction sites. May require standing, walking, bending, lifting over 50 pounds, and overnight travel. Certificates / Licenses Driver’s license or equivalent mobility required. Compensation and Benefits Salary range: $49.16 – 53.15 per hour.
