Fleet Maintenance Technician I:

Candidates who meet all requirements for this position will be eligible for a starting annual salary ranging from $62,855.07 to $73,854.70 , based on experience and qualifications. Fleet Maintenance Technician II:

Candidates who meet all requirements for this position will be eligible for a starting annual salary ranging from $69,316.34 to $81,446.70 , depending on experience and certifications. This position provides competitive pay, advancement potential, and access to full benefits while contributing to the reliability and safety of our fleet operations.
Essential Job Functions


An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

• Examines and diagnoses the cause and extent of the mechanical defects, recommends necessary repairs, and makes the authorized repairs. This includes determining whether to repair, replace, or rebuild defective parts.
• Makes major and minor mechanical repairs to vehicle drive trains, chassis, suspensions, and bodies including complete brake jobs; installing and adjusting clutches; removal and replacement of automatic transmissions; adjusting and rebuilding engines; installing and replacing electrical wiring; adjusting and/or rebuilding carburetors; rebuilding the front and rear end of vehicles; and tune ups on gas and diesel engines.
• Performs preventative maintenance, seasonal maintenance, and inspections of specialized equipment.
• Perform data entry related to calibration systems and other computerized vehicle equipment.
• Contacts other departments outside of Public Works to determine repair scheduling.
• Utilizes mechanical diagnostic testing equipment, as well as visual inspection to identify mechanical defects and determine the extent of repairs required. Makes the necessary repairs and ensures that the vehicle and/or equipment are functioning properly and safely.
• Maintains records on the repairs made to the vehicles and equipment. This includes maintaining inventory on parts and supplies. Performs oxyacetylene and MIG (wire feed) welding. Makes specialized designs and fabricates specialized equipment.
• Performs grinding of metals and plastics to obtain proper fit of repair parts. Makes repairs to various hydraulic systems. This may also include the reconditioning of equipment.
• Cleans and maintains the Vehicle Maintenance area and shop equipment.
• The position is also assigned additional job duties that fall within duties of the other Public Works Divisions, including, but not limited to, snow removal operations.
• Conducts mechanical inspections of privately owned vehicles requested by the Police Department due to criminal investigations. Provides reports and may testify in Court.
• Contacts various departments as well as automotive part vendors.

Requirements of Work
Fleet Maintenance Technician I Requirements:
Extensive technical or specialized training such as that which would be acquired by an associate degree or two years of technical or business school. Between one and three years of automotive and diesel repair experience is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL A) is required, or the ability to obtain one. Air conditioning certification required.

Fleet Maintenance Technician II Requirements:
Extensive technical or specialized training such as that which would be acquired by an associate degree or two years of technical or business school. Between one and three years of automotive and diesel repair experience is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL A) is required, or the ability to obtain one. Air conditioning certification required. Certifications below are preferred for the Fleet Maintenance Technician II position.

Knowledge of:

• The make-up, operation, installation of all components, assemblies, and systems of vehicles such as engines, manual and automatic transmission, front and rear axle assemblies, power steering and braking systems mechanisms, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to:

• Determining when and how far major components should be torn down, what parts and mechanisms can be reworked or refitted or should be replaced with new parts, and the types of and extent of adjustments and alignment required.

Skill in:

• The removal and reinstallation of major components and assemblies, such as engines and transmissions, and in the rebuilding, adjustment reinstallations alignment and meshing of such components and assemblies.
• The use of specialized tools and equipment and common hand tools. Strong skills in the use of automotive test equipment.
• wire feed, gas welding and machining.

• Must be able to lift various weights from floor to waist on a regular basis. Specific tasks include lifting maintenance equipment, supplies, construction equipment or other items.
• Specific tasks include the lifting of plow blades, tires, brake drums and rotors, etc.
• The worker must be able to move across a variety of terrain conditions including uneven ground.
• The employee is required to operate heavy equipment, motor vehicles or snow removal equipment for long periods of time.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

• Must be able to maneuver oil drums weighing up to 600 pounds on a wheeled dolly.

When assigned to emergency call duty, must respond, and if necessary, report to duty in all weather conditions and at all hours of the day or night.
