Behavioral Health Liaison - Police Department

The City of South Portland is currently seeking a 37.5 hour a week full-time Behavioral Health Liaison to join our Police Department. This is an opportunity to join a well-run city and play a part in serving our community with further opportunities for professional growth.

Position Summary: This position is expected to be a trained mental health and substance use disorder professional embedded in the Police Department (in the Community Response Unit) able to provide intervention, education, outreach, and referrals to service providers to at-risk community members in contact with the City, in particular due to Public Safety related incidents. This position functions independently and acts as a connection between South Portland residents and community resources, such as treatment services or facilities. Represents the Police Department in multiple settings and with various community organizations. It supports officer training regarding mental health issues, substance use disorders and related topics, and relevant community resources. This position supports the Peer Support Team coordinator with administrative tasks related to the peer support team. This position is expected to work evenings as required.


Education: Experience and educational requirements include a Bachelor's degree in a relevant social science or equivalent education and work experience. Master's degree in a related field is preferred as well as LCPC, LCPC-C, LCSW, LCSW-CC, CADC, LADC , and or / license eligible.


Experience: Experience working in an urban environment with individuals with a SUD, mental health issues or co-occurring conditions, as well as experience working within a law enforcement agency.

Salary Range: $32.40 - $36.93/hour ($63,180 - $72,013 annually) depending on experience. This position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
