Maintenance Mechanic

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Maintenance Supervisor – Supervisory General Engineer – or Chief – Facilities Management Service – for the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Work is assigned on a long‑term as well as a day‑to‑day basis. The employee will exercise judgement in prioritizing assignments to subordinates unless otherwise directed. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required – but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screen‑out element: Your qualifications will be first evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element – usually presented as question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision, Ability to interpret instructions/specifications (including blueprint reading), Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment, Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair, Knowledge of materials technical practices, and related skills. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work such as National Service programs, professional, philanthropic, or community organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, is credited. Duties Measuring, cutting, and constructing using standard building materials. Independently pan and complete projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses, and beams. Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Perform work to close tolerances – exact fit and structural soundness. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes with general and precision woodworking techniques. Repair plumbing systems. Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems. Steam system troubleshooting and repair, including backflow prevention valves, steam control valves, radiators, and coils. Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 1:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Physical requirements: The employee works from ladders, scaffolding, and hydraulic platforms; often in cramped, dirty, and hard‑to‑reach locations; may involve prolonged crouching, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing; frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts, and supplies up to 50 pounds; occasionally requires lifting items over 50 pounds. #J-18808-Ljbffr U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
