SQL Database Administrator

SQL Server / Cloud DBA – Tolling Group We are looking for a SQL Server / Cloud Database Administrator (DBA) to join the Tolling Engineering and Operations Team . The selected candidate will administer and support SQL Server and cloud databases within the Tolling Group. The role will also include help desk and application support responsibilities as part of a rotation with the Tolling team. Required Technical Expertise : The selected candidate should have: · Expertise working as a SQL Server DBA . · Expertise with SQL clustering, database mirroring, and high availability . · Experience working with large SQL databases . · Expertise writing Transact-SQL (T-SQL) . · Experience tuning SQL Server databases . · Expertise installing, upgrading, patching, and migrating SQL Server databases . · Experience working on a Windows platform . · Exposure to SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS . · Experience working with Azure Cloud . Key Responsibilities The selected candidate will: · Monitor databases to maintain and ensure database uptime and availability . · Troubleshoot application/database issues related to connectivity, access, security, and related areas . · Tune long-running SQL queries . · Review and refine existing database tasks and processes to better align with agency/group priorities. · Leverage O/S scripting utilities to support database maintenance, diagnosis, and troubleshooting. · Review existing database implementations and propose, execute, and/or direct necessary changes. · Perform SQL Server installations , including SQL Server 2022, 2025 with failover clustering . · Administer, support, and tune SQL Server databases . · Apply knowledge of data modeling principles . Collaboration & Professional Expectations The candidate will be expected to: · Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals . · Independently perform a variety of complex and challenging tasks . · Work collaboratively with a team of Engineering and Operations professionals . · Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing . Qualifications · At least 6 years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server databases. · At least 1 year of Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks experience . A certification may be accepted in lieu of experience. · Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems , or another applicable field, and/or equivalent skills, knowledge, and work history. · Demonstrated experience communicating effectively using standard requirements and design artifacts . · Minimum 3–4 years of hands-on experience upgrading E-ZPass Virginia Tolling SQL Server environments from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2019 , including: o Compatibility evaluations o Query Tuning Assistant (QTA) o Database Migration Assistant (DMA) · Experience diagnosing and resolving deadlocks and blocking in Tolling production workloads, including: o Extended Events o Query Store o Wait-statistics analysis · Experience tuning Very Large Databases (VLDs) of 2 TB , including: o Index optimization o Long-running workload analysis o Minimizing resource contention Desired Technologies · SQL Server 2019 · Cloud databases , including: o Azure o Snowflake o Databricks Special Instructions to Applicants · This position requires a fingerprint-based background check . · The successful contractor will be required to continue education at their own expense to stay current with VDOT technologies.
