Substitute Custodian

Northumberland County Public Schools is seeking dependable and hardworking individuals to serve as Substitute Custodians. Substitute Custodians provide custodial support on an as-needed basis to maintain clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environments for students, employees, and visitors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and other assigned areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and clean windows and other surfaces.
• Empty trash and recycling containers and properly dispose of waste.
• Replenish restroom and custodial supplies.
• Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces.
• Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms for meetings, activities, and special events.
• Report safety hazards, maintenance concerns, damages, and needed repairs.
• Follow division procedures for the safe use and storage of cleaning products and equipment.
• Secure assigned areas by checking doors, windows, and lights as directed.
• Respond appropriately to spills and other custodial needs.
• Follow all NCPS safety, confidentiality, and workplace policies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous custodial, housekeeping, or facilities experience preferred but not required.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work independently and complete assigned duties promptly.
• Dependable attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct.
• Ability to work effectively around students, employees, and the public.
• Must successfully complete all required background checks and pre-employment requirements.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

• Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb stairs for extended periods.
• Lift, carry, push, or pull custodial supplies and equipment.
• Safely operate standard custodial equipment.
• Work with cleaning products while following all safety procedures.
• Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Schedule and Compensation

This is an on-call, as-needed position. Assignments, locations, and hours may vary based on school division needs. Availability for daytime and evening assignments is preferred.

Substitute Custodians will be paid $126 per day. This position does not guarantee a specific number of workdays.
