Road Worker

Job Overview Responsible for the operation of a variety of light, medium, and heavy road maintenance equipment and for the physical maintenance and repair of county roads and bridges using hand tools. This includes hauling materials, grading berms, cleaning ditches, installing pipe and tile, loading trucks, removing bridge structures, rolling asphalt, and transporting equipment. Employees must also handle unlicensed equipment such as dozers, cranes, rubber‑tired excavators, and track hoes and operate licensed vehicles under Ohio Commercial Driver’s License rules. Responsibilities Operate a range of road maintenance equipment to haul fill dirt, salt, asphalt, stone, supplies, and personnel to and from work sites. Grade and slope berms, clean and dig ditches for installation of pipe and tile, and remove bridge structures. Load trucks with road materials such as stone or salt and unload construction materials. Roll asphalt, transport equipment, and apply various blacktop compounds for road surface repair. Construct and repair guardrail, build forms for concrete abutments, culverts, and ditches. Erect and repair fencing, dig post holes, and erect road signs. Clean roadside brush and trees, maintain roadway appearance, and pick up litter. Establish appropriate work zone signage and flag traffic around job sites. Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of vehicles and equipment. Estimate quantities of materials needed for assigned projects. Assist in the light maintenance and repair of vehicles as needed. Provide written reports as required. May be assigned equipment the employee is not proficient with under direct supervision. Qualifications High School graduate or GED with certified training in the use and operation of road construction equipment. Two years of experience operating light to medium road maintenance equipment. Class B Ohio Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement. Knowledge of small to medium road hauling and maintenance equipment, safety of operation, load limits, and light maintenance procedures. Understanding of laws governing motorized vehicle operation and maintenance methods for road materials. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the public. Flexibility to perform additional duties as required.
