Job Description and Duties
STATE PARK INTERPRETER I – CAPITAL DISTRICT / INTERPRETATION & EDUCATION / CALIFORNIA INDIAN HERITAGE CENTER
The reporting location for this position is the California Indian Heritage Center in West Sacramento, California. This position will work under the direction of the State Park Interpreter III.
The State Park Interpreter I is a key member of the interpretive and visitor services team at the California Indian Heritage Center (CIHC). This role supports CIHC’s mission by delivering high - quality interpretive programming, providing visitor services, and serving as a lead for intermittent, seasonal, and volunteer staff. Work may also occur in other Capital District units as operational needs arise.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
Occasional travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
This position is designated as not telework eligible.

Working Conditions
Primarily outdoor worksite with kiosk. Work in all types of weather conditions, including hot, dusty, rainy, and otherwise challenging environments. Walk distances on uneven surfaces, sometimes traveling to public restrooms or other facilities located a significant distance from the main work area. Duties may include assisting with parking area management during busy periods or special events. Ability to bend, stoop, lift, sit, and stand for long periods of time.
The California Indian Heritage Center operates Wednesday through Sunday, with additional openings possible for special events and programs. Weekend and holiday shifts, along with occasional evening work, are required.
Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee receives a temporary reduction in pay in exchange for PLP 2025 leave credits. The percentage of the temporary salary reduction and the number of PLP 2025 leave credits are determined by the position’s assigned bargaining unit. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
• Experience developing, planning, coordinating, and delivering interpretive programs, public presentations, special events, media materials, or educational content.
• Knowledge of California Tribal history, cultural diversity, Indigenous stewardship, and community - based programming.
• Skill in collaborating with staff, volunteers, community partners, and Native community members to create and deliver interpretive content.
• Experience providing visitor services, including public engagement, wayfinding, kiosk operations, informal interpretation, and revenue collection.
• Ability to assist with administrative tasks such as attendance tracking, program scheduling, reservations, reporting, permitting, and event coordination.
• Experience leading or training permanent, intermittent, seasonal, and/or volunteer staff.
• Strong communication skills for working with nonprofit partners, community organizations, government agencies, museums, contractors, and media outlets.
• Ability to maintain contact lists, support media distribution, and contribute to public outreach efforts (e.g., social media and webpage updates).
• Experience providing a safe, inclusive, welcoming environment for diverse visitors and colleagues.
• Ability to perform light housekeeping and maintain orderly visitor - service spaces.
• Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions, navigate uneven terrain, and stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
• Willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and special events as required.
• Ability to handle occasional travel and possession of (or ability to obtain) a valid driver’s license for state vehicle use.
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting an inclusive, discrimination - free workplace and fostering diverse cultural perspectives.
• Strong organizational skills for managing deadlines, administrative paperwork, meetings, and trainings.
