At the advertised grade, you will:

• Ensure personnel are following appropriate health and safety guidelines and are operating under approved health and safety plans with appropriate licensing.
• Prepare safety policies, procedures and guidelines, and develop and promote a safety training curriculum.
• Serve as a technical authority on Agency, inter-agency, and National committees involved in analysis, development, evaluation, and promotion of comprehensive safety, fire, and occupational health programs.
• Develop and apply methods and abatements to control, mitigate, or eliminate unsafe conditions or industrial processes.
• Provide expert guidance on occupational health matters to senior leadership to minimize risks to employees and the surrounding community.

When entering a Federal job at a grade level lower than the highest promotion potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently, as your career progresses. NOTE: Career ladder promotions are not automatic, and all eligibility and qualifications requirements must be met in order to progress to the next grade level.

You must be a U.S. citizen.

You must meet time-in-grade requirements no later than 30 calendar days after the closing date of this announcement.

If you are selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period if appointed as Competitive Service or a two-year trial period if appointed as Excepted Service.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. All conditions of the pre-employment security process must be met before an official letter of employment can be issued with a report for duty date.

This position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

You will be required to meet ongoing specialized safety training requirements in order to meet field safety standards.

Participation in the medical monitoring program is required.

Pre-employment physical may be required and periodic physicals thereafter.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below:

To qualify for the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as conducting occupational health inspections of work sites and field locations; working with stakeholders to develop solutions to health and safety problems; and recommending specific mitigation methods for an industrial hygiene/occupational health program.

Education

Industrial Hygienist: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related sciences; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). NOTE: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

Except in special circumstances, those new to the federal government will be hired at the starting salary (step 1) of the applicable grade range listed in the Overview section.
