MEDICAL LAB TECH

Summary: Obtain specimens from patients as required; perform medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease; record determination and results for review by and consultation with physicians.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Conduct analyses of body fluids such as blood and urine to determine presence of normal and abnormal components. Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology. Performs blood group, type and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes. Uses both automated and non-automated instrumentation in the chemical analysis of laboratory specimens. Analyzes test results and enters findings in computer. Performs quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data. Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure. Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating lab instruments and documents data. Records on instrument logs and repairs, replacement and maintenance needed of equipment.


Supervisory Responsibilities

Indirectly supervises other employees in the laboratory. Reports to the laboratory manager any observations or concerns. Responsibilities may include training new or existing employees.

Language Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as dilutions, percentages and volume.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.


Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge or Laboratory Information System order processing systems


Education, Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Associates Degree in Medical Technology or related field. Certification as a MLT by a nationally recognized board is also required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to infectious disease bearing specimens and blood borne pathogens. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
