Underwriting Consultant (Life Sciences)

Job Description In this role, you will use your underwriting, analytical, and sales skills to craft insurance solutions for CNA’s life sciences customers. Responsibilities Underwriting Expertise: Review applications and financial requirements to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with CNA’s guidelines and standards. Understand pricing components, rating methodology, and predictive modeling tools; price risk based on financial and competitive analysis. Use all appropriate underwriting tools (e.g., RST, BPMT, Merlin) and knowledge of strategies to ensure guidelines are followed. Demonstrate technical underwriting skills through strategic, thorough account reviews and file documentation. Prepare or analyze information on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status, and declinations to drive results within the assigned territory. Adhere to CAT guidelines and underwriting discipline to minimize exposure and appropriately price. Keep current on state and territory issues, regulations and trends. Portfolio Management: Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business and portfolio management goals. Prioritize time and resources to effectively manage and optimize producer performance. Operate with an Enterprise perspective to identify cross‑sell opportunities and create growth within other lines of business and customer segments. Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of CNA’s products and appetite while clearly communicating CNA’s position at the point of sale. Sales and Distribution Management: Build and maintain rigorous sales practices using all CNA systems including Salesforce.com and other sales tools and disciplines. Develop producer relationships to build pipeline, agency intelligence and drive performance to meet and exceed results. Develop and implement distributor‑specific plans, monitor performance, and adjust plans to ensure a substantial pipeline for future profitable growth. Drive effective relationship management and customer activities to build trust, facilitate negotiation and secure commitment with the customer. Proactively identify cross‑sell opportunities and partner with other underwriters to deliver comprehensive insurance solutions for the customer. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Knowledge of underwriting processes, coverages, and tools to gather and evaluate information for renewals and new business. • Ability to effectively interact and communicate with internal and external partners within the scope of responsibility, team and/or matrix environment. • Ability to uncover customer needs, position specific solutions, handle objections and close deals. • Ability to exercise judgment, negotiate and make sound business decisions based on authority level. • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to learn rapidly, adapt to change, exercise influence and prioritize multiple concurrent projects. Qualifications • 3‑10+ years of related underwriting experience. • May be hired as an Underwriter, Underwriting Specialist or Underwriting Consultant depending on experience and qualifications. • #LI-SM1 #LI-HYBRID. Compensation Base pay range for this role in SanFrancisco: $145,500–$182,000 annually. In certain jurisdictions (D.C., CA, CO, CT, IL, MD, MA, NY, WA) the national base pay range is $72,000–$141,000, dependent on relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
