Medical LAB Technician

General Summary Under direct supervision by laboratory technologist, leader and/or supervisor, and according to defined protocols, performs select procedures on blood and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and information systems. May perform phlebotomy as needed. Principle Duties And Responsibilities Perform selected chemical, cytologic, hematologic, histologic, immunologic, microscopic, morphologic, microbiologic procedures on blood and/or other bodily fluids or specimens according to defined protocols, using manual techniques and laboratory instruments. Apply knowledge, training and clinical experience to operate instruments, assess performance, and conduct quality control checks; recognize and refer implausible results or equipment malfunctions to the laboratory technologist, leader, or supervisor. Standardize, calibrate, perform preventive maintenance, quality control, and limited troubleshooting on laboratory equipment, instruments, or information systems; after competency testing, may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision. Comply with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control; maintain confidentiality of patient information. Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities, including proficiency testing, quality assurance monitoring, safe work practices, quality improvement committees, and regular competency assessments. Education and Experience Required Completion of an Associate Degree Program in Medical Laboratory Technology, Laboratory Science, or meeting equivalent educational requirements. MLT certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency (ASCP or NCA) desired; or completion of a military 50–60 week technician program meeting the minimum CLIA requirements; alternatively, meeting the requirements of #3 below. Successful completion of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree including at least five college courses among Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Nursing, Statistics, Physiology, Veterinary sciences, Mathematics, Introduction to Laboratory Sciences, Pathology, Microscopic Anatomy (Histology), Biochemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology (Blood Banking), Microbiology, Urinalysis, or Coagulation. Course work outside the U.S. must be verified by an NACES-approved credentialing evaluation service. Employees hired prior to 2005 as a Medical Laboratory Technician: Qualifications grandfathered as acceptable in lieu of educational requirement.
