SUMMARY:

Directs, coordinates, and manages all aspects of day‑to‑day Maintenance and Repair (“M&R”) operations at the Whitney Service Center. Responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of the company’s fleet of trucks and trailers, ensuring they remain in excellent working condition by supervising and leading a team of mechanics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety is the first responsibility to employees and customers; this is a safety‑sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe conduct. Manages the maintenance team at the Whitney Service Center, including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, development, promotion, discipline, and discharge of M&R personnel. Maintains communication with Operations, Dispatch and other OpCos for maintenance needs and completion times. Works with management and HSSE to interpret and ensure compliance with company and corporate policies and those dictated by DOT, DOL, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies. Assists in tracking and facilitating facility maintenance. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company and corporate policies and applicable laws. Observes mechanical devices in operation and identifies operational deficiencies. Adjusts, repairs, services, and/or replaces parts in engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, and other equipment. Adjusts or repairs hydraulic systems and components. Investigates complaints and equipment malfunctions. Performs scheduled and unscheduled work to support barge and fleet needs. Coordinates parts and materials needs to the parts department for non‑stock items. Analyzes performance of equipment. Sets up and operates manual, electric, pneumatic, and metal‑working tools to fabricate and repair parts. Initiates procurement of parts as required for equipment repair; responds and acknowledges repair requests. Records daily repairs using M&R maintenance computer software. Trains and supervises M&R employees in all phases of work, including use of equipment, tools, and procedures. Maintains and instructs others on proper safety procedures. Participates in equipment selection and capital‑plan preparation. Recommends improved work methods and procedures. Attends meetings and seminars to remain current with topics and techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess mechanical inclination and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Attendance and timeliness are essential; the employee customarily works at least 40 hours per week on a planned continuous basis. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent, or five years related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Experience and considerable knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, lift trucks, and other driven equipment and tools.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to read, write, and interpret routine reports and correspondence; and strong communication skills both verbally and in written form.

MATH SKILLS

Ability to perform arithmetic operations, compute rates and ratios, areas, volumes, percent, and to interpret bar graphs. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions, prioritize and problem‑solve in time‑sensitive situations; read and understand wire and hydraulic schematics. Apply common sense to carry out written or oral instructions. Organize and follow through to completion of projects and tasks with minimal disruption. Intermediate computer knowledge: database entry, Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Visio, Outlook. Multitask in a fast‑paced environment. Hazardous materials training. Detail oriented with good interpersonal and organizational skills. Flexible to work extended hours and adapt to change. Work well under pressure. Maintain accurate records and reports in maintenance software. Analyze repair mechanical failures. Work independently and as part of a team.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

Alaska Commercial Driving License with air‑brake endorsement (preferred).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear while communicating with customers, drivers and coworkers. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel or crouch while inspecting equipment. Regularly use hands, arms and fingers to inspect equipment, enter data, manipulate objects, tools, or operate controls. Maintain vision for close, distance and color and adjust focus during normal duties. Regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work near moving mechanical parts; regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, toxic or caustic chemicals, wet or humid conditions; occasional work in high, precarious places. Occasional risk of electric shock. Noise level ranges from moderate to moderately loud. Occasional exposure to outside weather, including Arctic cold and extreme heat and cold.
