JOB TITLE SUMMARY Job Title: Data Engineer Division: Information Technology Evaluation Group: Staff FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: Director, Information Technology EnterpriseSystems and Application Development Positions Supervised: N/A Job Summary The data engineer is responsible for the design and build ofsystems for collecting, storing, and analyzing data at scale fromdisparate sources. This position collaborates with stakeholdersacross the university to ensure the system meets the needs of theorganization and users. This position also provides technicalsupport to department users, manages system upgrades andenhancements, and is responsible for security configuration. Aspart of the IT team in Enterprise Systems, the data engineer’sefforts will also adhere to direction from the chief informationofficer, chief data officer, director of enterprise systems, andother university administrators. Job Responsibilities and Execution Collaborates with stakeholders across departments to understandthe university data reporting and analysis objectives Designs, implements, documents, and maintains a data lakeaccording to university data requirements Prepares university data environment for artificialintelligence (AI) adoption and use Recommends solutions or alternative methods to meetrequirements Provides technical support to department users of thesystem Develops and maintains system documentation, including usermanuals, technical guides, and standard operating procedures Manages any necessary system upgrades and enhancements,including testing and documentation updates Troubleshoots issues related to the data access andmanipulation and provide timely solutions Develops and implements system security policies andprocedures Ensures compliance with university data governance and securitypolicies Develops algorithms to transform data into useful, actionableinformation Create new data validation methods and data analysis tools Monitors system and integration performance and identifiesopportunities for improvement Participates in project planning and implementation forsystem-related initiatives Service Excellence Supports the mission of the University and serves as anambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence Models, supports, and holds others accountable to theUniversity’s values – integrity, dedication, excellence,creativity, and teamwork Provides excellent customer service to both internal andexternal customers Communication, Teamwork, and Collaboration Collaborates with staff to coordinate application upgrades orfixes Serves as a liaison with third parties and otherstakeholders Participates in user group meetings and conferences Job may require other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications — An equivalent combination ofeducation, training, and experience will be considered. Additionalrequirements may be designated by position. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field Minimum of 3 years working with Microsoft Data Products,including Azure Database and Power Platform tools. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities — May be representative,but not all inclusive, of the knowledge, skills, and abilitiesnecessary to perform this job competently. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals fromdiverse communities and cultures Strong understanding of university processes and data in orderto ensure correct implementation Thorough knowledge of Microsoft data management tools Knowledge of Microsoft Azure administration Effective organizational and interpersonal skills includingwritten and verbal communication skills Understanding of data lake and star schema configuration andmanagement Strong understanding of database design, structure functionsand processes and experience with databases tools Work Environment — Environmental or atmospheric conditionscommonly associated with the performance of this job’s functions.
