We are a family friendly company with operating hours M-F, 8a-5pm... no nights or weekends, and major holidays off. We are opening a closed door pharmacy, packaging and delivering oral medications for an underserved Behavioral Health population.
The following job description identifies the qualifications and standards for The Director of Pharmacy. The Director of Pharmacy will meet the following requirements and competencies listed. This position description provides a general overview of the type of work performed by employees within this classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive list of all duties, responsibilities, and qualifications that may be required of the employee assigned to the position. Depending on the facility, job duties may vary. The Director of Pharmacy reports directly to the IPS Director of Operations.- JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the overall operation of the hospital pharmacy department.
- Ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all groups of patients.
- Ensures compliance with all laws and governing agencies.
- Directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of pharmaceuticals and related substances and supplies.
- Participates in the department's planning, revenue analysis, budgeting, education, and human resources activities.
- DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Planning, organizing, and directing Pharmacy Department operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, in conjunction with IPS Director of Operations, Corporate Compliance Officer, and hospital administration.
- Monitors activities of the Pharmacy Department, taking appropriate action as necessary to ensure efficient and effective operation and quality patient care.
- Works closely with the nursing and medical staff and other clinical department managers in addressing Pharmacy Department issues as they are related to the services provided to all patients.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Conducts clinical monitoring of high-risk medications including, but not limited to, clozapine, lithium, valproic acid, opioids, benzodiazepines, and anticoagulants.
- Directs, optimizes, and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of pharmaceuticals.
- Oversees the storage and distribution of all pharmaceutical items in departmental and patient care locations.
- Directs and participates in the development, revision, implementation, and communication of policies, clinical guidelines, and treatment standards for the Pharmacy Department in accordance with hospital policies, The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, and federal and state regulations.
- Directs and participates in the human resources management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation, performance appraisal processes, and ensuring all required personnel documentation is current.
- Coordinates the department's in-service training.
- Attends and participates on hospital committees such as the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Infection Control, Quality, Department Manager's Meeting, and Medication Management Committee, as required.
- Performs all aspects of pharmacy management and pharmacist duties, as required.
- Prepares department budget for personnel, operating expenses, and capital equipment. Responsible for fiscal operation of the department.
- Works in the community to bring positive attention to the effective patient care that the hospital provides.
- Maintains a system of records in accordance with hospital policy for recording patient charges as well as maintaining adequate controls over requisitioning and dispensing of pharmaceuticals.
- Maintains formularies and other medication-related documents, information resources and references for preparations.
- Responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of performance improvement and CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) activities assigned to the Pharmacy Department.
- Reads, analyzes, and interprets pharmacy-related journals.
- Responds to common inquiries or complaints from facility partners, regulatory agencies, or members of the hospital staff.
- Reviews and summarizes articles and studies to effectively present information to management, medical staff, hospital staff, and public groups.
- Professional Requirements:
- Completes annual continuing education and competency requirements.
- Always maintains and ensures patient confidentiality.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state and federal regulations and TJC standards.
- Attends annual review and performs departmental in-services.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with administration, physicians, and staff in all departments.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Attends committee, CQI, and management meetings, as appropriate.
- Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process, as required.
- Ensures compliance with all company and facility policies and procedures.
- Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directives to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the company and the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
- Regulatory Requirements:
- Doctor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree, or equivalent.
- Graduate from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy or certified by the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC).
- Current Pharmacist certification or licensure in the state of practice.
- Preferred Certifications:
- Current certification in BLS (Basic Life Support) or CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
- Bloodborne Pathogen Training.
- Language Skills:
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong written and verbal skills.
- Skills:
- Management training in a hospital setting or at least 2 years of Pharmacy Department managerial experience required.
- Intermediate computer knowledge: Office 365.
- Automated pharmacy systems: Automated Dispensing Software, Analytics Reporting, Order Entry Software.
- Self-directed, motivated, and capable of supervising pharmacy support personnel.
- Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds, moving, lifting, or carrying boxes.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Fine Motor Skills.
- Visual Acuity.
