About Susitna Energy SolutionsSusitna Energy Solutions is an Alaska-based renewable and off-grid energy company specializing in solar PV, battery storage, inverter systems, generators, heating solutions, and complete off-grid power systems. Our projects range from cabins and remote residences to commercial facilities and rural Alaska applications. The nature of our work requires employees who are technically capable, resourceful, highly organized, comfortable working independently, and able to adapt to changing project conditions.
We are seeking an experienced PV & Off-Grid Power Systems Technician who combines strong technical ability with excellent customer service, computer proficiency, organization, time management, and project coordination skills. This is not an entry-level position.
Position OverviewThe PV & Off-Grid Power Systems Technician will support the design, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and technical support of solar PV, battery storage, inverter/charger, generator, and related off-grid energy systems. The ideal candidate can effectively manage their own workload, stay organized across multiple projects and customers, prioritize changing demands, and complete both field and administrative responsibilities without requiring constant oversight.
- Solar and off-grid system design
- Field installation, commissioning, service, and troubleshooting
- Technical support and customer communication
- Project coordination and job preparation
- Computer-based programming, monitoring, and documentation
- Scheduling, organization, prioritization, and follow-through
- Evaluate customer electrical loads, usage patterns, site conditions, and energy requirements.
- Design and size solar PV, battery storage, inverter/charger, charge controller, and generator-integrated systems.
- Perform load calculations and energy-use assessments.
- Size PV arrays, battery banks, inverter/chargers, charge controllers, conductors, overcurrent protection, and related balance-of-system components.
- Understand and work with 12V, 24V, and 48V DC battery-based systems.
- Interpret equipment specifications, wiring diagrams, manuals, and electrical drawings.
- Develop system layouts, equipment lists, bills of materials, and project documentation.
- Evaluate existing systems and recommend repairs, upgrades, or replacement options.
- Design systems with consideration for Alaska's climate, seasonal solar resource, remote logistics, generator integration, and customer requirements.
- Install, configure, commission, troubleshoot, and maintain solar PV and battery-based power systems.

- Work with PV modules, charge controllers, batteries, inverter/chargers, monitoring equipment, disconnects, breakers, communications equipment, and balance-of-system components.
- Diagnose charging, battery, inverter, generator, communications, and system-performance issues.
- Configure and program equipment according to manufacturer requirements and system design.
- Verify proper system operation following installation, service, or equipment replacement.
- Perform preventative maintenance and system inspections.
- Maintain clean, safe, organized, and professional jobsites.
- Accurately document system settings, changes, test results, equipment information, and work completed.
Exceptional organization and time-management skills are essential for this position. Our technicians frequently balance fieldwork, technical support, system design, customer communication, project preparation, documentation, and travel.
- Manage and prioritize multiple active projects, service calls, customer requests, and technical issues.
- Maintain an organized schedule and effectively manage daily and weekly priorities.
- Complete assigned work within expected timelines and track open items through resolution.
- Maintain accurate and timely customer, project, and service documentation.
- Prepare for upcoming jobs by reviewing project information, equipment requirements, materials, tools, travel arrangements, and known technical concerns.
- Create and maintain accurate material and equipment lists.
- Communicate proactively when schedules, materials, technical issues, or project conditions may affect completion.
- Coordinate effectively with administrative staff, technicians, customers, vendors, and manufacturers.
- Balance urgent service needs with previously scheduled responsibilities.
- Keep digital files, photographs, notes, system information, and customer records organized.
- Complete documentation and administrative responsibilities promptly.
- Work independently without requiring continual reminders or supervision and demonstrate strong follow-through and personal accountability.
Strong computer proficiency is required. Modern solar and off-grid systems rely heavily on software for programming, monitoring, troubleshooting, documentation, system design, and project coordination.
- Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, or comparable productivity software.
- Email, electronic calendars, scheduling, cloud-based file storage, and digital document management.
- CRM, project-management, field-service, inventory, or business-management software.
- Creating and maintaining organized digital customer and project records.
- Preparing professional technical notes, service reports, equipment lists, and customer documentation.
- Manufacturer configuration and programming software, remote monitoring portals, firmware updates, and equipment configuration.
- Researching technical information using manufacturer manuals, specifications, wiring diagrams, and online resources.
- Basic spreadsheet use for calculations, project tracking, equipment lists, and system information.
- Laptops, tablets, smartphones, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, networking devices, and related commissioning technology.

- Ability to learn new software and technology independently.
- Provide professional technical support in person, by phone, email, and remote connection.
- Ask effective diagnostic questions and systematically troubleshoot problems.
- Explain technical concepts in terms customers can understand.
- Help customers understand system capabilities, limitations, maintenance requirements, and proper operation.
- Manage customer expectations professionally and remain patient during stressful system failures.
- Provide equipment and system recommendations based on actual customer needs.
- Recognize when additional technical expertise is required and appropriately escalate issues.
- Follow through on unresolved customer and technical issues and maintain accurate service records.
- Meaningful professional experience with solar PV, battery storage, inverter/charger, DC electrical, renewable-energy, or comparable power systems.
- Strong understanding of DC electrical theory and photovoltaic system fundamentals.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical and power-system problems.
- Experience with solar PV system design and equipment sizing.
- Excellent organization and time-management skills.
- Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Strong follow-through and attention to detail.
- Strong computer and technology skills.
- Excellent administrative, documentation, written communication, verbal communication, and customer-service skills.
- Experience coordinating technical or construction-related projects.
- Ability to read electrical diagrams, schematics, equipment manuals, and technical specifications.
- Ability to independently research and resolve technical problems.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel throughout Alaska.
Applicants must have completed recognized professional solar PV education beyond informal or exclusively self-taught training. Candidates should be prepared to provide documentation of completed training.
- Solar Energy International (SEI) PV coursework, including applicable PV design, battery-based systems, installation, or advanced coursework.
- Training through a NABCEP Registered Training Provider or coursework carrying applicable NABCEP-approved education hours.
- Accredited college, university, apprenticeship, or technical-school coursework in photovoltaic systems, renewable energy, electrical technology, or a closely related discipline.
- Other nationally recognized solar or renewable-energy training programs of comparable rigor.

Candidates are not expected to know every manufacturer, but must possess a strong enough technical foundation to independently learn unfamiliar equipment using manufacturer documentation and technical resources.

Travel & Alaska Fieldwork
Travel is an important component of this position. Projects may require travel throughout Southcentral Alaska and to rural or remote communities. Travel may involve driving, commercial flights, small aircraft, boats, or other transportation depending on the project. Candidates must be comfortable working in remote environments and adapting to changing weather, transportation, lodging, material availability, and site conditions. Some projects may require overnight or multi-day travel.
