Service Apprentice

Spire is seeking a Service Apprentice to work in the Mississippi operations. This position is responsible for performing field service and meter work on the natural gas distribution system. Duties and Responsibilities Works with Service Technicians as helpers while receiving on‑the‑job training to qualify to perform routine customer service procedures including gas turn on/turn off, read in/read out, dead meter checks, meter pulls, meter loop constructions, and investigation of gas odor complaints. Assist with meter reading, line locating, leak survey, leak repairs and grill/light work as assigned. Successfully completes all computer‑based training required to qualify to perform Service Department–covered tasks. Completes paperwork and procedures associated with work assignments and departmental job duties. Trains for required night/weekend duty and emergency response functions. All other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities None Required Education (certifications, licenses) High School diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record and the ability to drive a Company vehicle. Must reside within a 30‑mile radius of posted work location. Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Ability to learn and apply knowledge of the Company procedural manuals and perform work assignments according to outlined procedures. Ability to successfully complete the training required to progress to the Service Technician position in a timely manner and subsequently perform all essential duties of the position. Ability to use general and specialized computer applications to manage data. Requires being exact or highly accurate and meeting strict deadlines; ability to read, write and interpret work‑related documents; ability to perform basic math skills. Ability to work effectively alone and with others in a group or team; requires interaction with external customers or the public; ability to deal with unpleasant, angry or discourteous people and conflict situations in a professional manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers and supervisors. Ability to react appropriately and effectively in emergency situations; includes responsibility for the health and safety of others. Physical Demands, Environment and Schedule Requires wearing applicable protective and safety equipment. Ability to use hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls; walk, stand, climb, crouch, crawl, bend or twist; and lift or move heavy objects. Requires repetitive movement. Ability to work in confined spaces and maneuver in awkward positions. Includes exposure to contaminants, sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Ability to work in very hot (above 90 °F) and very cold (below 32 °F) temperatures, and extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions. Requires working outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions and indoors in non‑controlled environmental conditions. Requires exposure to hazardous equipment, conditions and high places. Requires exposure to minor burns, cuts, bites or stings.
