Adjunct Professor of Government

Position Summary The Government Department at William & Mary will take a pool of adjunct faculty to teach courses in American Politics, International Relations, Comparative Politics, Political Theory, and Research Methods. Adjuncts may teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses, prepare syllabi, deliver instruction, assess student learning, hold office hours, and fulfill other instructional duties as needed. Appointment Details Summer Session 1: May 26 – June 26 Summer Session 2: June 29 – July 31 (expected contract effective date: June 25) Summer Session 3: May 26 – July 31 Fall: August 10 – January 9 Spring: January 10 – May 24 Responsibilities Teach assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses Prepare syllabi and course materials Deliver instruction and assess student learning Hold office hours Fulfill other instructional duties consistent with departmental needs Required Qualifications Master’s degree in political science or a closely related field, or equivalent experience and qualifications Ability to teach compelling courses in an area of instructional need Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree, or ABD status, in political science or a related field at the time of appointment Previous academic teaching experience is desirable Evidence of teaching expertise in an area of instructional need Conditions of Employment This position is not eligible for work visa sponsorship Part‑time limited to the term; not eligible for benefits May require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional evenings, weekends, or overnight work as needed As part‑time exempt employees, adjuncts are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program; total hours worked may not exceed an average of 29 hours per week over a twelve‑month period beginning May 1 each year Within Arts & Sciences, adjunct instructional workload limits apply; total adjunct work hours for part‑time employment from May 1 through April 30 may not exceed 1,500 hours (generally equivalent to up to 14 credit hours for fall/spring and up to 6 for summer, not to exceed 18 credit hours for the year) Adjuncts must maintain an in‑person presence for the duration of their appointment; remote teaching opportunities are rare and subject to approval Background Check William & Mary conducts background investigations for applicants, including reference checks, a criminal history record check, and when appropriate, a financial (credit) report or driving history check.
