Position Summary
This onsite Scientist 3 position supports the W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group (Q-20) at Los Alamos National Laboratory and serves as a Product Realization Team (PRT) Lead responsible for the development and realization of polymer components for the W93 weapon system. The role provides technical leadership across product realization activities, including requirements development, design coordination, testing, qualification, and delivery of a producible, high-quality product. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across LANL, Production Agencies, and DOE/NNSA and Department of Defense partners to ensure successful execution of this critical national security mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the planning, execution, testing, status reporting, and delivery of polymer component product realization activities for the W93/Mk7 program.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to scientists, engineers, and technical staff while leading cross-functional teams to resolve complex research, engineering, and product development challenges.
- Develop and implement technical requirements, specifications, procedures, reports, and plans supporting product realization, qualification, and evaluation activities.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including DOE/NNSA, Department of Defense, Production Agencies, and national laboratory partners to manage interfaces, build consensus, and resolve technical issues.
- Manage complex technical projects,ensuringwork is completed safely, on schedule, and within programobjectivesand budget constraints.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary research and development teams and mentoring technical staff.
- Thorough knowledge and experience developing and implementing technical research and development projects, including problem analysis, experimental approaches, and implementation of technical solutions.
- Experience developing technical requirements, specifications, plans, procedures, and reports related to product realization or engineering activities.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical projects, coordinate cross-organizational efforts, and effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Thorough understanding of scientific integrity, safe laboratory practices, and execution of technical work within regulated environments.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Strong communicationand organizational skills
- Ability to work through problems quickly and effectively and define a clear path to resolution
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with nuclear weapon systems design, engineering, development, qualification, certification, production, or surveillance, particularly U.S. Navy systems.
- Degree or specialized experience in chemistry, polymer science, materials science and engineering, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of polymer materials, chemical sciences, material interactions, aging mechanisms, and evaluation of experimental data.
- Experience withrequirementsengineering,GD &T, engineering drawings, and product realization from conceptual design through qualified production.
- Familiarity with Defense Programs Business Process System (DPBPS).
- Active DOE Q Clearance, equivalent DoD clearance, or the ability to obtain andmaintaina DOE Q Clearance.
- Ability and willingness to support domestic travel to DOE sites, approximately 20% asrequired.
