CDL Driver/Highway Maintainer

Full‑time, 40 hours per week. First shift: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM. Locations: Bolton, East Hartford, East Windsor, Farmington, Glastonbury, Hartford, Meriden, Middletown, Southington, Vernon, Willington, Wethersfield, Windsor (must live within 30 miles of the assigned garage). Position Requirements Valid CDL Class A or B with tank (N or X) endorsement and no air‑brakes restriction. Valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC). License number, class, expiration date, and issuing state must be listed in the application. Bridge positions require additional qualifications: medically cleared for a respirator, no facial hair, meet equipment weight requirement, and night work specified. Military members and recently honorably discharged veterans with at least two years of commercial motor vehicle experience may qualify under the Military Skills Test Waiver Form. Responsibilities Perform construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadways, bridges, airports, and related facilities. Maintain and assist with small and less complex mechanical equipment and larger equipment as needed. Accept emergency duty assignments, including snow and ice removal, and mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Respond to storm events, which may require working extended periods during holidays and weekends. Produce a copy of CDL Class A or B, valid MEC, and a completed CTDOT‑CDL‑1 form for interview invitations. Examples of Duties and Equipment Trucks: 3‑to‑9 ton dump, platform, or refuse trucks with or without winch; snow plows; duplex dump trucks; crash attenuators; trailers and towed equipment (except tilt‑bed trailers); pickup vehicles; aerial bucket trucks; wrecker with winch; tandem/10‑wheel dump truck. Equipment: bituminous curbing machines; pothole patcher; tractor mowers with single flail; wood chippers; chainsaws; culvert cleaning machines; compressors; concrete mixers; concrete vibrators; hydraulic or engine‑driven tools; test borers; Class 24 tractor with attachments; wing plow or other side‑mounted attachments; forklift. Duties: survey monument setting; burning and cutting with acetylene torch; flagger (traffic control); assist material storage supervisor with material handling; perform moderately skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, plumbing, painting; assist various supervisors with reports or radio operation; wildlife hazard control; radio monitoring and communication; escort vendors, contractors, or personnel in secure airport areas; guard or watchperson duties; receive training to respond to emergency situations at state‑owned airports; other related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair techniques for roadsides, roadways, bridges, and airports. Understanding of processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance trades. Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to operate complex mechanical equipment and perform routine repairs. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and utilize computer software. Minimum Qualifications – General Experience One year of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance, and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, including operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in a recognized maintenance trade. Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in one of the maintenance trades can substitute for the general experience. Completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services can substitute for the general experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience with snow removal. Experience with landscaping. Experience with construction. Experience driving CDL vehicles. Special Requirements Possess and retain all appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications. Willingness to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever services are required. Physical Requirements Incumbents must possess adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity and maintain such fitness to perform duties. A physical examination will be required. Working Conditions Incumbents are exposed to extreme weather, frequent lifting of heavy weights, hazardous road and traffic conditions, heights when working on bridges, poison ivy, insect bites, and allergy irritants during summer months, and loud machinery. Completion of an asbestos removal program may be required. Protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles may be necessary.
