The goal of the special duty nurse is to care for all students' health needs so that they may be able to participate in classroom instruction with minimal interruptions. The special duty nurse is posted in an assigned classroom with one (1) assigned student. The special duty nurse will do other tasks, within their professional scope of responsibility, as assigned by their supervisor, so long as it does not interfere with their duties and responsibilities for their one (1) assigned student. The special duty nurse will ride a SPED bus in the AM and PM.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Expected to be at school all days full-time nurses are at school
If the student is absent and there is a high need at another Collierville School, the Special Duty Nurse may be asked by the Health Services Supervisor to fill a need at another Collierville School during the assigned work hours.
Base School: dependent on the assigned student?s school
Anticipated Work Hours: 8 hours, with 30-minute lunch break, dependent on the student?s school hours
Some responsibilities may include but are not limited to monitoring of blood glucose levels, administering insulin, managing blood sugar levels of the assigned student, deep oral/nasal suctioning and knowledge of seizure disorders and emergency seizure medication administration. Ability to give water, food, and medication through a g-tube/mic-key button. Tracheostomy care.
*All skilled nursing tasks are depended on the needs of the student.
Nurse is to remain with student while the assigned student is on campus or on school-related trips during the regular school day.
Nurse may ride a Special Education bus in the morning and afternoon and care for other Medically Fragile Students.
Expectations:
Care for assigned student, as prescribed by the student?s physician.
Assistance with in-school transportation (i.e., pushing the wheelchair, attendance on a field trip).
Assisting therapists under their direction (i.e., holding an arm, stabilizing a swing) so that the physical/occupational therapists may position the student properly.
Assisting the classroom teacher, regarding assigned student, under the teacher?s direction.
The teacher dictates all educational and classroom goals. The 1:1 nurse will only be involved in the student?s medical needs.
In the event of an emergency, the Special Duty Nurse will be expected to assist with other students/staff members, within the Transition Classroom environment.
In the event the 1:1 Nurse is absent or needs to leave early or arrive late he/she will contact the Health Services Supervisor Immediately AND the School Administration with both a phone call or text and email.
School-based issues (i.e., schedules, classroom activities, etc., will be addressed by the school-based administration). Both the Health Services Supervisor and the school administration will address all other issues.
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid TN Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License
Two (2) years experience in nursing
Some experience with special needs children
Experience with managing diabetes

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria and the goals and priorities of planning and development programs.
ADA COMPLIANCE:
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as rude/irate customers.
