CLASSIFICATION: Regular, Full-time, Non-Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Conservation and Disaster Field and Training Supervisor I provides direct supervision, training,
development, and logistical support to crews of AmeriCorps members during their term of service. They
provide oversight of field operations for conservation and disaster response services while focusing on
risk management and the successful completion of project objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Integrated GED and Vocational Certification Support Instructor will perform the following functions:

1. Spend 60% of time in the Field and 40% in office
2. Manage projects according to partner expectations and AYW standards;
   1. Project Partner Liaison
   2. Coordinate project logistics;
   3. Communicate in a timely and professional manner with project partners to maintain project quality, timelines, and goals;
   4. Conduct frequent site visits to ensure successful project outcomes;
   5. Purchase supplies needed for project work and coordinate with AYW’s accounting team to properly document expenses according to required timelines;
3. Train and supervise AmeriCorps members;
   1. Assist with the planning and implementation of Crew Leader and Crew Member orientations;
   2. Conduct ongoing training for AmeriCorps members throughout their term, both on project sites and at the program’s office location. Train and lead AmeriCorps members in conservation projects, disaster response activities, risk management, and safety standards on site;
   3. Cultivate a positive member experience through one-on-one support, team-building and leadership development;
   4. Support positive mental and emotional health of members through one-on-one and group check-ins, providing resource referral and programmatic accommodations and adaptations;
   5. Handle conflict management and enforce disciplinary measures as necessary with Crew Leaders and Crew Members in accordance with program policies and procedures;
   6. Assist in required performance evaluations of AmeriCorps members;
   7. Transport members to enrollment and service activities as required by program guidelines;
4. Complete and maintain timely and accurate project documentation;
   1. Enter All Project Logs into the database system weekly
   2. Store project related documents in shared electronic files, including project logs, billing notes, purchase receipts, personnel forms, incident reporting, and member performance documents
   3. Manage field metrics and expense data for grant reporting;
5. Maintain up-to-date trail, chainsaw, and disaster deployment expertise, seek out relevant continuing education opportunities;
6. Maintain facility, chainsaw shop, tools, gear, and program vehicles to support overall programmatic goals and project needs;
   1. Set up, manage, and track vendor accounts;
   2. Establish maintenance protocols with members and leaders;
7. Participate in interviewing/selecting potential AmeriCorps members in collaboration with the Recruitment & Outreach Coordinator;
8. Assist and support disaster deployments on the ground and as needed in coordination with the Manager;
9. Leading activities and ensuring safety on volunteer projects in coordination with public and private entities;
10. Attend weekly staff meetings and other team meetings as required;
11. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Required

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION

• High School Diploma or GED and completion of a 2-year vocational program related to the specified field of study, and 2 years of the specified work experience; OR
• 30 hours towards a bachelor’s degree with at least 6 hours (equals 1 year) in the specified or related field of study and 3 years of the specified work experience.

EXPERIENCE

• One to three years of previous related experience in conservation and restoration programs.
  
• Prior experience leading and teaching a team or supervising.
  
• Familiarity with AmeriCorps or public service.
  
• Experience with reporting measurements, working with contracts, responding to audit requests, ensuring compliance, and coordinating members.
  
• Experience working with young adults and academically and socially at-risk opportunity youth, ages 18–28, with a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, and cultural and spiritual practices.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Access.
• Knowledge of Google Docs and Google Sheets.
• Knowledge of trail building and habitat restoration.
• Mechanical and basic tool knowledge, including chainsaw use.
• Knowledge of CPR and Wilderness First Aid.
• Knowledge of herbicide use.
• Knowledge of team-based coordination and logistics.

SKILLS

WORKING MODEL AND CONDITIONS

• ENVIRONMENT: In-person and onsite.
• INDOORS: Environmentally controlled office or shared-office setting involving work with groups or teams and contact with others face-to-face, by telephone, or through other methods. No hazardous indoor conditions. May be required to work in hot, wet, cold, or other significantly unpleasant conditions.
• OUTDOORS: Independent or isolated settings that may involve hot, wet, cold, or other significantly unpleasant conditions, including disaster areas.
• ATTENDANCE: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour unpaid lunch break, including off-site Disaster and Conservation Hitches. Occasional weekend work may be required to meet deadlines or complete special projects.
• TRAVEL: Travel for partner cultivation and project-planning purposes; occasional travel to AmeriCorps service sites; transportation of Corps members as needed; and occasional travel for professional conferences, workshops, training, and the annual staff retreat.
