Phlebotomy Technician

Venesco has a current opening for a Phlebotomy Technician to provide services at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma and surrounding locations for the Armed Services Blood Bank Center. Competitive pay and benefits offered including: Medical, Dental, Vision and Prescription benefits Short- and Long-Term Disability Life Insurance Continuing Education/License Reimbursement Paid time off Hours: Normal hours will be established by the work center and will be a 40-hour week, with an 8-hour day scheduled between the hours of 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, Monday through Sunday, depending on the blood drive schedule, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. Some blood drives require longer workdays, up to 12-hour days; in these cases, the HCW will be scheduled to work during the peak work hours and be transported back to the donor center or lodging site as to not exceed the 40-hour work week. Responsibilities:

1. The primary purpose of this position is to interact with donors to collect blood products. Performs a variety of duties on a rotating basis in various sections to include phlebotomy, donor interviews, registration, vitals, and donor recovery. Interacts with donors and staff in a tactful, professional, and courteous manner.
2. Draws blood samples on adults; reviews collection kit to ensure all required information is present; determines types of specimens to be collected and if proper patient preparation has been accomplished; selects appropriate venipuncture site and cleans to ensure contamination-free field, considering any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions if indicated by soldier, civilian or medical personnel.
3. Performs routine and complicated venipuncture. Applies sterile dressing to site and instructs donors on care required to prevent infection and/or bruising. Provides immediate care to donors who may faint or become nauseous during the procedure. Collects specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative or clot tubes as required by test requested.
4. Performs and documents results of waived Point of Care Testing in the Vitals Section. Performs quality control and routine maintenance according to local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
5. Labels specimens in accordance with the SOP. Follows all regulatory regulations (e.g., Food and Drug Administration, AABB and College of American Pathologists) and safety guidelines for sample shipment and handling of all specimens. Follows infection control regulations in handling, storage, packaging, and disposal of biohazard materials. Determines the specimen(s) to be collected for the laboratory work to be performed based on the laboratory requisition or clinical orders entered in the hospital information system. Must be able to explain the procedure for collection of specimens to the donor.
6. Determines by SOPs and other guides how specimens must be processed and stored. Operates centrifuge to separate specimens. Refrigerates, store at room temperature, or freezes specimens as required. Maintains strict confidentiality of all testing results.
7. Process whole blood units into components. Strips, segments, weighs, and stores whole blood units. Records information, such as the time of started and stopped drawing blood. Manufactures packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and recovered plasma in accordance with SOP.
8. Initiate human volunteer apheresis procedure. Takes donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and initiate collection of single donor plasma and single donor platelets using apheresis equipment and standard procedures.
9. For the purposes of this agreement, 'instruction and monitoring' of phlebotomy personnel and students shall be limited to providing technical guidance and preceptor training on proper phlebotomy techniques. This role does not include any supervisory responsibilities such as performance evaluations, disciplinary action, or scheduling. Instructs and monitors various phlebotomy personnel or students on rotation in phlebotomy techniques. Areas of concerns include patient identification, site selection, site preparation, blood collection, specimen labeling, patient care, blood handling techniques and emergency treatment of adverse phlebotomy reactions. Orders appropriate laboratory testing required in CHCS/AHLTA, maintains supplies and equipment, maintains adequate supplies in patient care areas, monitors stock levels and expiration dates of available collection tubes and replenishing, when required. Cleans and wipes equipment, monitors supplies and pulls outdated stock. Assembles equipment, verifies correct instrument operation, and reports defects.
10. Receives donors, visitors, and answers telephone calls. Determines nature of inquiry. Directs the inquiry to the appropriate section. Takes and relays messages. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the section at all times. Load and unload blood drive materials for mobile blood drives.

Requirements Degree/Education : High school equivalent and completion of a donor Phlebotomy program accredited by The Joint Commission or CAP. Certifications : Basic Life Support from a course approved by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Board Certification: Certification/registration as a Phlebotomy Technician, Donor Phlebotomy Technician or equivalent by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (ASDHA). Experience : Must have performed 50 successful donor collections or patient venipunctures /sample draws with an accredited donor center, laboratory, plasma center, dialysis center, or healthcare facility.
