Overview There is a reason why Special Forces soldiers are called ‘elite’ troops. That’s because few can pass the rigorous mental and physical standards it takes to become a Special Forces operator. Among the most distinguished and well-known of the US Military’s elite Special Forces are the Navy’s Special Warfare Operators; known to most as ‘Navy SEALs’. They take on some of the Navy’s most sensitive intelligence gathering and small squad tactical missions. SEALs are able to operate in water, on land, and in the air. SEAL stands for ‘SEa, Air, and Land’. Their training is intense and covers large and small arms proficiency, advanced communication techniques, underwater demolition, clandestine underwater insertion techniques, and HALO jumping. The motto is ‘The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday’. Navy SEAL Training Pipeline To say that training to become a Navy SEAL is long, hard and challenging is putting it mildly. It is a yearlong endeavor that tests a candidate’s mental and physical limits and teaches how to stay cool under pressure in hostile environments. Both enlisted and officer candidates train side by side with no rank privilege. Here are the specialized training stages to become a Navy SEAL: Phase 1: BUD/S Preparatory Course Location: Great Lakes Naval Training Center – North Chicago, Illinois Duration: 8 weeks This phase introduces what it’s like to be a Navy SEAL and assesses whether a recruit has what it takes to proceed. The course culminates with a modified Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test. The test is pass/fail and is designed to be challenging. Phase 2: BUD/S Indoctrination Course Location: Naval Special Warfare Center – Coronado, CA Duration: 3 weeks This phase focuses on conditioning and education about the history and traditions of Navy SEALs. Phase 3: Basic Underwater Demolition / SEAL School (BUD/S) Location: Naval Special Warfare Center – Coronado, CA Duration: 24 weeks This is the main training phase. The first four weeks emphasize teamwork, perseverance, and humility, including a week known as Hell Week. The remainder covers physical conditioning and training in small boat handling, diving physics, basic scuba, land warfare tactics, weapon proficiency, demolitions, SEAL communications, and hydrographic reconnaissance. Phase 4: Static Line / Free Fall Parachutist Training Location: Naval Special Warfare Center – Coronado, CA Duration: 4 weeks This phase trains parachute operations, including static line and free fall techniques. Phase 5: SEAL Qualification Training (SQT) Location: Naval Special Warfare Center – Coronado, CA Duration: 26 weeks During SQT, recruits learn core tactical knowledge for SEAL platoons, including small unit tactics, advanced demolitions, land navigation, all-weather training, basic field medicine, and maritime operation basics. SERE training (survival, evasion, resistance, escape) is also included, along with parachute operations for HALO and HAHO. Other Training Post-SQT, Navy SEALs may pursue additional specialized training for their mission roles, such as sniper training or advanced combat casualty care. SEAL Weapons, Gear, and Role SEALs typically carry a minimal amount of gear to stay fast and stealthy. Common items include a lightweight helmet, extra ammo, M4A1 Carbine, SIG Sauer P226 or Glock 19 pistol, a knife, grenades, radio gear, night vision, protective equipment, and a first-aid kit.
