Job Summary

The Inpatient Float Pool at UT Southwestern is a high-impact clinical team supporting safe, flexible staffing across Clements University Hospital and Zale Lipshy Pavilion. Float Pool RNs and PCTs provide care across more than 30 inpatient units spanning critical care, medical-surgical, oncology, telemetry, progressive care, rehabilitation, and specialty servicesoffering an unmatched opportunity to work across diverse patient populations and clinical environments. As a strategic clinical resource within hospital-wide nursing operations, the Float Pool plays a vital role in meeting the dynamic needs of both hospitals. In partnership with Central Staffing and nursing leadership, the team brings skilled clinical support where it is needed most, helping units respond to changing patient acuity, census, and staffing needs while maintaining safe, high-quality patient care.

Float Pool Level 3 RN

As a Float Pool Level 3 RN, you will provide expert, adaptable nursing care across a diverse range of adult inpatient medical-surgical, telemetry, progressive care, rehabilitation, oncology, and specialty settings. This role is designed for an experienced RN who values clinical variety, embraces change, and thrives in dynamic environments. You will apply strong clinical judgment, adapt quickly to the needs of each unit, and collaborate effectively with diverse interdisciplinary teams while maintaining consistent standards of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.

Required Experience and Education

• Education Graduate of accredited nursing program
• Experience 1 year of acute med/surg nursing experience
• Licenses and Certifications (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Upon Hire and (ACLS) ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Upon Hire and (RN) REGISTERED NURSE Current Texas RN license, Upon Hire or (NLC) NURSING LICENSURE COMPACT-BNE Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) RN license, Upon Hire (NIHSS) Natl Inst Health Stroke Scale Certification Upon Hire (CPI) CRISIS PREVENTION INSTITUT CER within 180 Days

Job Duties

• Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. Takes all assessments into consideration age specific criteria.
• Anticipates patient's and/or patient's family needs and expectations and utilizes these in conjunction with assessment to develop appropriate plan of care for patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation.
• Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on completed assessment. Completes documentation of interventions. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care. Confers with all members of health care team in collaborative, fashion, sharing information and observations of patient and/or patient's family in manner that contributes to optimal patient care.
• Prioritizes nursing interventions based upon completed assessment. Identifies changes in condition as evidenced by nursing assessment, labs, x-rays, etc. Reports changes and takes follow-up action.
• Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care according to evaluation. Documents interventions and modifications to plan of care.
• Adheres to hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice while delivering nursing care to patients. Suggests practices to enhance nursing care based on current literature and research.
• Provides answers and/or education to patient and/or patient's family. Completes documentation of all education provided. Obtains feedback and evaluation of understanding from patient and/or family. Demonstrates effective communication with children. Con- tributes to patient and/or family verbal comfort with after discharge care.
• Welcomes and orients patient and/or family to unit. Encourages patient and family participation in care. Reviews plan of care with patient and family every shift. Explains special diets, tests, procedures and medications in easily understood language. Makes frequent rounds on patients, and communicates when will return.
• Assumes accountability for all actions in workplace. Reports errors promptly and takes appropriate follow-up action to rectify error. Provides supervision of and direction to unlicensed support personnel and nurses new to environment. Delegates duties appropriately and within legal parameters.
• Serves as advocate to patient and/or family. Responds to patient's and or patient's family's complaints. Reports complaints to Clinical Nurse Manager or their designee. Utilizes chain of command to resolve patient, operational, or personal work related problems.
• Participates in performance improvement activities as directed. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
