Job Summary
The respiratory therapist is a healthcare professional employed to perform all respiratory care diagnostic and therapeutic procedures provided by the Department of Respiratory Care. They should be energetic and motivated to support the success of a growing service. The respiratory therapist should refer to supervisory personnel in any doubtful situation.
Responsibilities and Requirements
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of time)
- Demonstrate ability to relate to coworkers in a professional and respectful manner, in order to assure and promote a culture of safety. (5%)
- Perform all respiratory related therapeutic and diagnostic maneuvers in accordance with established policies and procedures of the department. This includes:
A. Implement and assess the function of oxygen and therapeutic gas.
B. Ensure proper set‑up and implementation of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
C. Provide aerosolized medication.
D. Provide CPT and IPV.
E. Set up and monitor ventilators in accordance with the department and hospital policies.
F. Communicate with peers and staff to develop and improve inter‑ and intradepartmental services.
G. Perform CPR and diagnostic procedures including ABG analysis, pulse oximetry, nitric oxide pulmonary hypertension studies, etc.
3. Assess and reassess patients for therapy, including vital signs, breath sounds, physician orders, tolerance and response, oxygen requirements, sputum characteristics, etc. (5%)
4. Special duties: Interact with physicians and nurses, work in ICU area, respond to critical areas (ER, OR, Code), perform routine checks on Life Support Unit, assist with bronchoscopy and other invasive procedures, perform bedside studies (ventilator mechanics, compliance, metabolic cart studies). (25%)
5. Perform all other aspects of Respiratory Care in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. (5%)
6. Other duties as required: cleaning, disinfecting, routine mechanical maintenance of equipment, maintain neat storage areas, answer phone professionally. (5%)
7. Safety/Infection Control: practice universal precautions, maintain a safe environment, report risk management concerns, complete all mandatory safety training. (5%)
8. Service: provide patient‑centered care, timely, courteous, respectful. (10%)
9. Quality Improvement: incorporate quality assessment into daily work, assist with data collection, complete paperwork timely, chart accurately, report quality issues to management. (5%)
10. Age‑Appropriate Care: provide specialized education to infants, children, adolescents, adults, geriatric patients. (Include age‑specific assessment skills.)
11. Specialized Care: restrain care, pain management, abuse assessment as applicable.
Job Specifications
Minimum Education: Graduate of an AMA approved school Respiratory Therapy preferred.
Minimum Experience: Leadership skills desirable.
Required Registry or License: Registered with the NBRC, Licensed in Missouri within 6 months of hire.
Independent Action: Demonstrate high quality therapy skills with moderate supervision and independent decision‑making.
Pressure of Work: Capable of standing, walking, lifting moderate weights, handling hazardous gases.
Working Conditions: Exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, anesthetic agents, body fluids, hazardous materials, electric hazards, unpredictable situations.
Protective Requirements: Eye protection, gowns, lab coat, mask, gloves, lead aprons.
Equipment Knowledge: Familiar with equipment used for therapy and diagnostics.
Physical Requirements: Heavy lift, carry up to 50 lbs, prolonged standing, manual dexterity.
Vision Requirements: Adjust vision for varying light.
Required Licenses and Certifications
State of Work Location: Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Wisconsin.
Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA).
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Respiratory Care Practitioner - Missouri Division of Professional Registration.
