Coatings QC Lab Technician - Color & Viscosity

Job Title: Quality Lab Technician The Quality Lab Technician performs routine and specialized testing on production batches to ensure all products meet established quality specifications before and during filling. This role focuses on evaluating color, gloss, viscosity, and physical properties, making necessary adjustments, and maintaining accurate records in accordance with defined test methods and ISO procedures. The position is primarily lab‑based with some time spent on the production floor, and it plays a key role in supporting the efficiency and reliability of the Quality Department. Responsibilities Conduct all prescribed testing of production batches in accordance with established test methods and quality standards. Verify that all production batches meet established specifications, including color limits and physical properties, prior to filling. Confirm that product remains within specification at the time of filling and approve final fill check panels for production. Perform quality testing including, but not limited to, color, gloss, viscosity, and physical properties of products. Determine and recommend adjustments required to bring products into quality specifications. Record all batch adjustments, fill checks, and related quality data on batch tickets and in appropriate documentation systems. Follow all ISO procedures and quality control guidelines during testing, documentation, and approvals. Prepare fill check panels and provide approvals for filling, consulting with the Quality Manager as needed. Participate in various short‑term projects aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Quality Department, as determined by the Quality Manager. Transfer hazardous waste materials, such as filters, rags, scrap paint, and solvents, to the designated satellite hazardous waste area as required. Ensure hazardous waste containers are labeled in compliance with all applicable requirements. Maintain clean, safe, and organized workstations and retain storage areas in the lab. Collaborate with production personnel and other team members, including pulling samples and communicating quality results as needed. Proactively ask questions, seek clarification, and engage with the team to support continuous improvement in quality processes. Essential Skills 1–2 years of quality control (QC) laboratory experience, preferably in an industry related to coatings, paints, or similar products. Hands‑on experience performing wet chemistry or similar lab‑based quality testing. Experience testing and evaluating color, gloss, viscosity, and physical properties in a QC lab environment. Ability to follow established test methods and ISO procedures accurately and consistently. Basic math skills, including working with percentages and fractions, to calculate adjustments and interpret test results. Strong attention to detail to ensure that all batches meet specified quality standards before and during filling. Ability to multi‑task and manage several batches or tests concurrently while maintaining accuracy. Comfort working with hazardous materials in a controlled laboratory and production environment. Ability to maintain accurate, legible, and complete records on batch tickets and related documentation. Capability to work effectively on a primarily lab‑based role with some time spent on the production floor. Additional Skills & Qualifications Industry‑related QC lab experience is preferred but not strictly required for candidates with strong transferable laboratory skills. Familiarity with quality control or quality assurance practices in a production or manufacturing environment. Experience working in a production setting, including pulling samples from production lines, is highly beneficial. Knowledge of colors and color evaluation in a quality context. Annual RCRA training is required for handling and transferring hazardous waste; prior experience with RCRA procedures is an advantage. Ability to work collaboratively within an outgoing, engaged team and to ask questions and show enthusiasm for learning. Strong organizational skills to maintain clean and orderly lab and retain storage areas. Comfort participating in short‑term quality improvement projects and adapting to changing priorities. Work Environment This role is approximately 90 % lab‑based and 10 % on the production floor. The position involves working with hazardous materials in a controlled environment and requires adherence to safety protocols at all times. The typical schedule is on second shift, from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional optional weekend work during busy periods.
