HJDC Summer Teacher

Position Overview The HJRC Summer Enrichment Program Teacher will work at the Hartford Juvenile Residential Center for a 6-week program aimed to help young people ages 12-17 to improve their educational, social & emotional skills. The teacher will work under the direction of the Site Director to lead classroom instruction, delivering an age-appropriate, gender- and trauma-sensitive curriculum with an intensive focus on remediation in math, reading and writing. Training and a curriculum will be provided before the program begins. Classroom Instruction & Support Provide instruction in math, reading and writing following prescribed curriculum Develop weekly lesson plans Instruct students individually or in small groups Use trauma-informed methodologies to help manage student behavior issues in the classroom Follow the security and safety protocols of the Hartford Juvenile Detention Center Determine opportunities for Intern to support and lead classroom instruction Work with the program director to evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and make adjustments as necessary NOTE This list is a guide. $53.00 PER HOUR

Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Math, English, or related field State of Connecticut teaching certification in Grades 6-12, in appropriate content area where applicable Experience in school or after-school instruction Interest in working with young people who may struggle academically and/or emotionally Willingness to build relationships with young people Flexibility and adaptability, able to shift styles to fit the needs of a wide range of cultures, people and organizations Preferred Master’s or advanced degree Fluent in Spanish or Creole Familiarity with the Sanctuary model of trauma-informed care and Cornell University’s Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Working Conditions Work will be performed inside of the Hartford Juvenile Detention Center, with occasional meetings taking place at the Domus office in Stamford, CT. This is a temporary, 6-week, 6-hour/day, non-exempt position, which is not eligible for benefits. Teachers are expected to be present for all days of instruction. Teachers will earn $40/hour for all hours of instruction, training and required meetings.
