Cath Lab Special Procedure Technologist II

Assists credentialed providers with diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures in cardiac and vascular laboratory environments. Works under the direct supervision of a credentialed provider and contributes to teamwork in support of the department’s mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Monitor radiation safety and complete documentation and compliance tasks.
• Perform quality assurance checks on x-ray equipment and protective garments and accessories.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues and initiate vendor service calls.
• Assist the hospital radiation safety officer with surveys and compliance documentation for the cardiovascular laboratories (CVLs).
• Serve as scrub, monitor/recorder, and x-ray technician for CVL procedures as assigned by the Charge RN or management team.
• Prepare and position patients for invasive procedures.
• Assist with cardiovascular tests and record patient hemodynamic activity using specialized electronic test equipment, recording devices, and laboratory instruments.
• Obtain hemostasis at arterial and venous access sites after procedures, including sheath removal and safe management of hemostatic devices.
• Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot procedural equipment as needed.
• Recognize cardiac arrhythmias and hemodynamic waveforms, and alert the credentialed provider and other team members during procedures according to protocol.
• Administer intracoronary and/or intra-arterial medications under the direct supervision of a physician.
• Prepare and maintain a sterile field using aseptic technique.
• Support physicians in the sterile field as a scrub by assisting with and maintaining the sterile field during CVL procedures.
• Prepare, maintain, and operate hemodynamic and monitoring equipment.
• Provide basic and advanced life support, including defibrillation, when required.
• Maintain proficiency in performing point-of-care tests, including activated clotting time (ACT), oxygen saturation, glucose, and arterial blood gas (ABG) testing.
• Provide patients with education about procedures.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

• Proficiency with IVUS, Site Rite, atherectomy devices, pacemakers and ICDs, and coronary angiograms and interventions.
• Ability to retrieve PACS images for presentation during active cases.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Experience: At least 12 continuous months of cardiac cath lab, electrophysiology (EP), neuro interventional radiology (IR), and/or special procedures work experience within the past three years.
• Education: Successful completion of an accredited radiologic technology program (ARRT).
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Registered Radiologic Technologist license in Washington or Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist license in Oregon.
  • Radiologic Technologist certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • One of the following certifications within 12 months of hire:
    • Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES)
    • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS)
    • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Certificate in Vascular Interventional Radiography (VI)
    • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Certificate in Cardiac Interventional Radiography (CI)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certificate within 6 months of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 2 months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 1 month of hire.
• Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated customer-focused service skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with peers and administration.
  • Ability to perform duties competently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain proficiency in assigned CVL department/unit roles, including scrub, monitor/recorder, and x-ray technician.
  • Proof of continuing education to maintain registry.

Work Environment and Other Requirements:

• On-call work is required, with a requirement to respond on-site within 30 minutes of being called.
