Overview The Helper will safely assist drivers and other employees in the collection of solid waste materials from residential trucks and other customer premises. The role includes loading, sorting, and maintaining waste collection vehicles while ensuring safety and compliance with company and regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities Collect solid waste and recyclable materials from customer premises and curbside. Load solid waste into the rear or side of the waste collection vehicle. Sort recyclables and deposit materials into the appropriate compartments when applicable. Assist the driver in safe operation of the vehicle, including backing up and maneuvering in tight spaces. Operate equipment on the truck to compact trash and materials. Audit the waste collection vehicle for necessary equipment before departure. Report all customer-related problems to the driver immediately. Identify, tag, and notify the driver of prohibited waste items and remove them from the cart or can. Follow all safety checks and precautions in performance of duties. Work closely with the supervisor to improve routing efficiencies. Maintain predetermined route quality standards. Ensure that all required personal protective equipment is worn at all times. Maintain a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance at all times. Assist the driver in keeping the interior cab and exterior of the vehicle clean. Assist with sorting, cleaning carts, cleaning the warehouse, stacking pallets or gaylords, placement of cans in roll‑off container, and operation of cardboard compactor. Attend safety and branch meetings. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management. Requirements High school diploma or GED desired, but not required. One to three months of related experience or training desired, but not required. Valid driver’s license preferred, but not required. Ability to meet safety‑sensitive functional criteria according to company standards. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to read, write, and communicate with others. Ability to follow instructions and perform duties under limited supervision. Ability to operate necessary equipment. Physical/Mental Demands Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift in an outdoor environment 90% of the time. Must be able to use hands and fingers, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and balance. Visual requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Ability to manually lift/move up to 65 pounds regularly and push/move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rain/storms, extreme hot and cold weather, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles. Work in an outdoor environment up to 100% of the time. Work on routes away from the branch location continuously throughout the day. Occasionally work in high or precarious places. Drive in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly. Work environment is normally loud. Benefits 15 days of paid time off.
