The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:
- Professionally maintain all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles being operated in the area.
- The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods. The incumbent performs routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
- Must be able to diagnose, maintain, repair and modify the following systems: Transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission, along with fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems including air and electrical for light and heavy-duty equipment.

The working environment you can expect The Anchorage shop is located at 5420 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Anchorage, AK. Traveling in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is possible in this position. Travel consists of day trips and overnight stays.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and/or progressively responsible experience providing the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential duties of either 1) routinely and independently resolving unusual issues and developing or modifying techniques; troubleshooting electronic/mechanical systems; and/or performing computerized diagnostic mechanic duties, or 2) directing and reviewing the work of others while helping on the most complex projects associated with light duty and automotive equipment.
Essential Core Competencies:
Knowledge of current safety practices, repair techniques and terminology; the vocabulary needed to read and interpret technical manuals and regulations; and lubrication requirements.
Applicable skill in maintaining clean and safe work and tool area;and the use of standard shop tools and procedures.
Ability to retrieve, read and apply O.S.H.A. guidelines;retrieve, read and apply information from technical manuals, computers and microfiche; select and use proper tools; maintain, and repair shop tools and equipment; use lubrication equipment; recognize wear points; understand oral and written instructions in English; perform work accurately, safely, thoroughly, and efficiently; and use digital volt ohm meter. Must have a willingness to attend and pass factory authorized schools on specific vehicle, equipment, or aircraft and apply acquired training to specific problems.
Position - Specific Competencies :
The above journey/advanced level worker is required to complete unusually difficult work; adapt and modify procedures, operations or processes required to complete the work; work in the absence of available or applicable guidelines; and consistently apply skills of a higher level of difficulty required.
The lead worker is required to assign, monitor, train and evaluate daily tasks; make decisions and set and balance priorities; coordinate tasks of others and work efficiently; ensure adherence to work schedules, quality standards, safety and security rules; give clear instructions; recommend appropriate solutions to difficult situations; and motivate others.

For advanced journey workers:
Knowledge of the following systems in order to diagnose, maintain, repair and modify: drive trains, suspension systems, and emissions. Knowledge of techniques and procedures of light duty automotive equipment maintenance and repair using electronic diagnostic equipment; techniques and procedures of heavy equipment maintenance and repair using electronic diagnostic equipment; aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) practices while at an airport duty station;federal regulations regarding performance standards and specifications of ARFF equipment while at an airport duty station; and state and federal regulations regarding commercial vehicles.
Ability to retrieve information from computer programs, CD ROMs, etc.; ensure computer chips function properly; ensure computer calibrations are adjusted properly; make repairs to vehicle bodies and frames; apply municipal requirements for Inspection and maintenance (IM) of vehicles; learn and provide snow removal seasonally as called upon; overhaul engines (types vary with duty station); prioritize inspection steps; select and properly operate diagnostic equipment; use precision measuring instruments; apply electronic analysis to equipment problem diagnoses; and manipulate tools in confined spaces.
For lead workers:
Ability to work in an efficient manner; ensure adequacy of resources, equipment, and tools available to do the work; and recommend alternative solutions to problems encountered.
