Per Diem Clinician-this is a non-exempt, commitment to at least one 10 or 12-hour shifts every 6 weeks required.


Up-night/weekend/daytime/swing shifts available, but up-night availability is strongly preferred.

Program Description

Edgewood's Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) provides youth and families a safe, structured, child-friendly and supportive place to address mental health needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The CSU was created in conjunction with the San Francisco Department of Public Health to evaluate and triage children and youth (ages 5-17) experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms or a mental health crisis.


Position Summary

The Per Diem Clinician works within a multidisciplinary team and is responsible for triaging crisis cases, clinically assessing clients for voluntary and involuntary holds due to danger to self, others, or grave disability, providing crisis intervention services, completing psychosocial assessments and documentation, providing clinical case management, care coordination, and follow up care to ensure successful linkages to appropriate services, all within a fast paced environment that consistently fluctuates in number of clients being served at any particular time (maximum 4).


Core Competencies
  • Highly skilled in mental health crisis evaluation and response. Strong understanding of mental health disorders, including impact of trauma on child/youth development, and psychological and behavioral interventions with children and families.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with a team of crisis evaluation and intervention professionals to rapidly assess mental health disorders, identify needs and solutions, and make recommendations for placement.
  • Knowledge of community resources, eligibility criteria, and referral processes in order to facilitate access to services and act as a liaison/advocate on behalf of clients and families.
  • Case management and discharge planning skills.
  • Ability to develop, maintain and strengthen partnerships with other service providers within Edgewood and among the community who can provide information, assistance and support to children, youth and their families.
  • Ability to communicate and generate reports both verbally and in writing for service integration, treatment team collaboration and service documentation according to programmatic and professional practice standards.

Essential Functions

• Clinically assess clients to determine if they meet voluntary and involuntary hold criteria as determined by danger to self, others, or grave disability.

• Triage crisis cases within a multidisciplinary setting to include collaboration with many agencies such as police, fire, Child Crisis, CPS, HSA.

• Conduct individual crisis assessments, family sessions, and collateral interviews to adequately gather information and formulate appropriate dispositions and safety plans.

• Provide psychological/behavioral interventions to clients and families experiencing a mental health crisis.

• Engage in crisis interventions and de-escalation, including the application of conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving techniques and/or manual restraints as necessary.

• Use interpersonal communication skills to develop rapport and engage client and caregivers.

• As part of the crisis team- assess, evaluate and monitor the safety of the client and others at all times.

• Engage clients and caregivers as full partners in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.

• Implement clinical policies and procedures and actively enhance communication, coordination and integration of care with other Edgewood service areas and with external providers.

• Contribute to organization-wide quality management and improvement efforts by consistently providing the highest quality professional interventions, fulfilling all documentation requirements, and proactively seeking ways to enhance the quality of services and surpass minimum required standards.


Applied Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Master's or Doctorate Degree in Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, Social Work or related field

• Must be registered with the BBS

• Experience working with children, youth and families experiencing acute crisis that put the youth in jeopardy of being psychiatrically hospitalized.

• Experience working with at risk, disenfranchised and/or minority populations

• Experience working with children, youth and families that have been or are involved in issues relating to trauma and/or abuse (verbal, physical, sexual, and neglect).

• Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively with individuals and groups.

• Bilingual preferred

• Excellent verbal, written and consultation skills

Salary Information

This Per Diem position has an hourly pay range of $42.00 - $51.98, depending clinical experience and threshold language skills. *Please note- the language differential is contingent on passing a language proficiency test.
