Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full‑service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa. The Blaster is an entry‑level role responsible for blasting, cleaning, and preparing tank car interiors by removing debris, grit, weld spatter, and surface imperfections. The role involves grinding, vacuuming, and applying protective materials to ensure surfaces meet quality standards. The incumbent also maintains equipment and supports a clean, safe work environment while adhering to strict safety and quality requirements in a physically demanding industrial setting. Duties may vary, and employees may be asked to perform additional job functions as needed. Primary Job Functions Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to: Utilize a safety‑approved air gun to remove grit and dust following blasting operations; remove protective coverings, clean trucks and components, and inspect railcars for damage Grind and remove weld spatter, laminations, and sharp edges from tank and hopper car interiors; level girth welds on floors as required Thoroughly vacuum tank car interiors and apply foil and tape to stainless steel surfaces as specified Maintain equipment in proper working condition and ensure adequate supply levels Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe, and promptly report any potential hazards Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and as part of a team Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision Ability to read, interpret, and adhere to safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and other work‑related documentation Strong focus on safety and quality. Ability to work any shift, including overtime, in accordance with the union contract Dependable and reliable attendance. Preferred Qualifications Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment. Rail industry experience Tank car knowledge or experience Work Environment & Schedule Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions. Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces May work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding 10 ft. off the ground with proper PPE and fall protection. Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols On‑site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.
